BURNS What anbnal lives at the fastest metabolic rate? Dr. T.R.E. City. Our little hummingbird that often does not weigh more than an unworn dime! Its food con- sumpti(Hi rate is terrific and it has the highest rate of metabolism of any bird or mammal. For example, a resting m- tissue metabolizes 15 times as fast as a gram of pigeon tissue and 100 times Burns as fast as a gram of elephant tissue.

The shrew family comes fairly close to the hummingbird but it tops the list. With such a metabolic rate and such a tremendous food intake the hum mingbird could live by eating most of the day (which it does) but unless nature took care of its metabolic rate during the night it would starve to death by morning. What happens? When it settles down for the night its metabolic rate drops to 8 cubic centimeters of oxygen per gram per hour instead of its active daytime rate of 24 cc. of oxygen per gram of body weight per hour. This occurred in the 1st 20 minutes of rest.

By midnight it was firing at a metabolism level only l-15th as rapid as its daytime rate. It survives because it slows down, becomes torpid, its body temperature drops to that of the surrounding air, and should you go looking for hummingbirds around 2 a.m. and find one sleeping you can pick it off its branch as though it were a special kind of fruit and it will make no attempt to get away, so lethaigic is it during the night! Inman Camp Has Openings The Inman Christian summer camp program, which gets under way Sunday, July 4, still has some openings for boys and girls, E. G.
