C oflnrreS&SlBEfl 6 Nuclear disarmament group says Dnannlks SIR: On behalf of the Albemi Valley Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament I wish to extend our thanks to the people of the community who generously donated during our recent tag day. Peace in our world will not come about automatically - it will require determined work and pressure from all concerned people who support justice and democratic economic development for the millions who are living in abject poverty and are the victims of oppression. In the face of the enormity of the problem, people feel helpless. The first step in overcoming this urge to inaction is to keep informed. To this end, the coalition uses some of the tag day receipts to subscribe to, and make available to interested people, magazines and newspapers produced through the peace network. Three important magazines are (1) Ploughshares Monitor, primary peace research report issued by Project Ploughshares at Waterloo University: (2) Press for Conversion, published by Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) Ottawa; and (3) CPPNW Quarterly, , issued by the Canadian Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. Also, as the occasion arises, Hurt himself laughing at share allegations SIR: Im glad I didnt go to the recent SHARE banquet: I could have hurt myself laughing too hard. If the Times write-up was quoting accurately, speaker Barry Clausen was stringing one absurd comment after another. Mr. Clausen, a private investigator and infiltrator of the Earth First movement, claims Greenpeace is linked to Earth First. He also claims that Earth First is indirectly funded by contributions from less notorious environmental societies. He further declares that Earth First is a terrorist" organization. All three statements are patently false. The statement linking Earth First to terrorism shows that Mr. Clausen has little concept of what terrorism really is. Terrorism tries to justify killing people for the sake of a cause. Earth First has never killed anyone, much less advocated anything even close. Mr. Clausens rantings are a crock, and its regrettable that our newspaper didnt treat his statements with the ridicule they deserve. JACK THORNBURGH Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson WELL, MOMS SURE TO HME FOUHD WE CAR Bt NCW WO we will be bringing in speakers, and showing some of the excellent films which are available. One interesting and informative example of what a few people can accomplish, is the video produced by the Nanaimo Veterans Against Nuclear War (VAN A) which presented the hazards of nuclear waste remaining at Hanford and the risks from visits of nuclear-powered and nuclear-capable ships and submarines at Nanoose.
