Mr. Meier is a practitioner of the ancient art of blacksmithing, but he'd prefer to be known by the more specialized term--a farrier. A blacksmith, Mr. Meier explains, crafts metal for a multitude of purposes, while a farrier does nothing but shoe horses. Unlike the old-time farrier.

however, Mr. Meier goes to his customers. With his forge and anvil loaded on a truck he travels the area around Prince George in north British Columbia. It takes about an hour to shoe a horse, Mr. Meier said, and the cost is usually $14.

He learned the art in a school in Colorado. Mr. Meier explained that there are two types of shoeing, cold and hot. Hot shoeing involves taking the ready horse shoe. trimming and then custom fitting it to the horse.

Cold shoeing simply involves nailing a standard shoe onto the horse. Mr. Meier said he much prefers hot shoeing, although it takes much longer than the cold. The advantage, he said, lies in the fit. The shoes can be made to fit the hoof.
