TEN THE NEWS-PALLADIUM SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1937 RAILROADS ASK RATE INCREASE Need Half Billion To Meet 'Higher Costs, I. C. C. Is Told (By Associated Press) WASHINGTON, Nov. 6- -Executives of the nation's class one railroads told the Interstate Commerce commission today their lines need $508.000,000 more income to meet increases in payrolls, taxes and supplies.

The margin between income and operating expenses has been squeezed so thin. they said in a petition to boost freight rates and passenger fares. that rail systems face a crisis. asked for a flat increase of 15 per cent on freight rates and an increase in passenger eastern territory from 2 to a mile. farcents The flat freight increase would not apply on five major commodities on which certain maximums were asked.

These were coal and coke, lumber, fruits and vegetables, and sugar. It was estimated the higher freight rates would add $460.000.000 to annual income, the passenger fares would add $48,000,000: Hearings may last into next summer. The $47,500,000 freight rate increases October 22, on the heavy commodity list, required one day less than a year to win approval. SO. HAVEN NURSE HURT WHEN LOOSES CONTROL OF AUTO SOUTH HAVEN, Nov.

Lola Belle Gessey, a nurse at Penoyar Memorial hospital in South Haven, sustained injuries of undetermined seriousness at 9:30 o'clock this morning when her coupe overturned twice on US-31 five miles south of this city. Miss Gessey lost control of her car when the right front wheel left the concrete and caught in the soft shoulder of the highway. Miss Gessey was brought to Penoyar Memorial hospital by a passing motorist. At 5 o'clock Friday afternoon Christine Clark, seven-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Thomas Clark, was injured when she is reported to have dashed from behind a parked automobile on Phoenix street into the path of 8 car driven by William Teske, South Haven motor car dealer. Teske took the child to City hospital where her injuries were attended. She had minor lacerations. FAST SOUTHERN TRAIN STRIKES TRUCK; FIVE DEAD LOVEJOY, Nov. 6 Five persons were reported killed when the engine and five cars of the Southland, Central of Georgia passenger train, were derailed after striking 8 truck here today.

Central of Georgia railway offices in Macon said they received a report from Joe H. Howell, conductor of the train, that the engineer, D. C. Wall of Atlanta, and fireman, Jim Henry, of Macon were apparently buried under the engine. The other three reported dead, the office said, were occupants of the truck.

No passengers were reported seriously hurt. The Southland was headed from the Florida west coast via Atlanta and Cincinnati to the middle west. WOMAN IS INJURED IN AUTO ACCIDENT Injured when the car in which she was riding was struck behind by an Illinois car reported not to have halted for a stop street, Mrs. Harold Biederbick was taken to Mercy hospital at 3:45 a. m.

today. She was released later this morning following an examination. Mrs. Biederbick was riding in a car with her brother and sister-in-law. The car was driven by her sister-inlaw, Mrs.

Charles Fields. Other passengers were Fields, Mrs. Estelle Phillips, of 214 Seeley avenue, and Mrs. Dorothy Fuller of St. Joseph.

Police said Mrs. Fields was coming into the city on Highland avenue when the accident occurred. She halted for the stop sign at Fair avenue, and her car was hit from the rear by one driven by William Janosek, of Berwyn, Ill. Both cars were damaged in the crash. CITY'S CEMETERY SUPERINTENDENT WINS U.

S. HONOR HERMAN C. VOGT National honor has been bestoyed upon Benton Harbor's cemetery superintendent, Herman C. Vogt. Vogt, president of the Michigan Association of Cemetery Superintendents, recently was named to the board of directors of the Association of American Cemetery Superintendents, when it held its national convention at Ft.

Worth, Tex. With Vogt on the board are John C. Biehl, Trenton, N. Casper J. Todt, St.

Louis, and Edward R. Longstretch, of Philadelphia. Vogt has been the guiding light in the beautification of Crystal Springs cemetery which has placed it among the outstanding cemeteries of the nation. At The Theaters William Powell and Myrna Loy in morrow at the Liberty theater. LIBERT William Powell has survived all these without a stooge, now he inherits He parries William Powyears.

Kennedy's supporting role is his first since his return to Hollywood from New York, when he definitely announced that he would never again venture behind the footlights, preferring to devote himself exclusive to notion pictures. The picture, co-starring the popular "Mr. and Mrs. Thin Man," is described a laugh-packed farce with Powell as an itinerant artist and Miss Loy as a smart New York gown shop proprietor fighting over who's to marry whom.

Mary and "Buddy," probably the best known wife and husband in America although they are not married to other, are together in a motion picture! Meaning Jack Benny's Mary ingstone and Mary Pickford's Charles "Buddy" Rogers, who head the cast of Paramount's scintillating comedy with music, "This Way Please," which has its last performances tonight at the Liberty theater. Martha Raye, one of the Honolulu lulus of "Waikiki Wedding," the gay comedy with music which opens next Monday at the Bijou theater, essays a high one and probably makes it in the photograph above. 6-Mr. and Mrs. Frank Heckathorne of Dayton announce the marriage of their daughter, Thelma, to Harold Rose, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Rose who reside southeast of Buchanan.

The wedding was 'performed this afternoon at 3 o'clock in the parsonage of the Methodist Episcopal church by Rev. Thomas Rice. Attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Grey Best of Buchanan.

The bride wore a gown of rust silk crepe with brown accessories. Mrs. Rose was a member of the 1936 graduating class of Buchanan high school. Mr. Rose graduated from Eau Claire high school in 1931 and is employed by the Clark Equipment company.

Mr. and Mrs. Rose will reside with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Heckathorne.

A reception will be held in the I. 0. 0. F. hall, at Dayton at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.

ADOPT PART OF HOOVER'S PLAN G. Party Policies To Be Shaped In Advance Of Campaigns (By Associated Press) CHICAGO, Nov. executive committee of the Republican national committee met today with the power to appoint a commission of 100 to formulate party policies in advance of the 1938 and 1940 campaigns. Creation of the commission, to be known as "committee on program," was the compromise reached by the national committee when it yesterday to consider former President Herbert Hoover's proposal for an unofficial convention of the party next year. Although the personnel of the advisory group was not expected to be selected until after conferences with leaders of the party and Republican members of Congress, a source close to the executive committee predicted chairman might be selected today.

Names prominently mentioned for the post included those of Senator Frederick Steiwer of Oregon, who delivered the keynote address at the Cleveland convention in 1936, and' John R. McCarl of Nebraska, former comptroller general of the United States. The program committee, charged with responsibility of considering "pertinent policies and issues of government" in what was termed "the crisis confronting the country," provided for in a resolution introduced by National Chairman John D. M. Hamilton.

The committee adopted It unanimously. Hamilton said the resolution represented the consensus of those whose until yesterday debated hotly the advisability of a mid-term Republican convention. The Coulby, operated by the Pickands Mather, company of Cleveland carried net tons ore from Allouez, to Indiana Harbor, Ind. THIEVES RANSACK ARDEN FARM HOUSE Raymond Green, of 352 High street, Benton Harbor, reported last night thieves had ransacked his farm dwelling east of Arden sometime during the past three weeks. A circulating heater, medicine caminet, set of silverware, and several articles of clothing, including a brown overcoat and zipper jacket, were taken. Green discovered the theft late yesterday, and reported to the sheriff's office.

38-Nov. 6 "Double Wedding," which opens to- FALL FESTIVAL DRAWS CROWD Pearl Grange School Nets $115 For Purchase Of Equipment A hundred and fifteen dollars for use in buying playground equipment was turned into the treasury of the Pearl Grange Parent-Teacher association following the fall festival held at the school Thursday evening. The event was widely attended. Booths displaying farm produce, baked goods, fancy work, candy, popcorn and refreshments were attractively decorated under the direction of Mrs. Leo Wagner.

Edward Meredith and Charles Winters built the booths signs and a loudspeaker was installed by Leo Wagner outside the building which attracted passersby. In charge of booths were Mrs. Jane Marszke and Mrs. Ernest Godfrey for refreshments, the Misses Edith Wagner and Carol Jean McKindley, on popcorn and candy, Elizabeth Mrs. Edward Kuehl on fancy work, Mrs.

August Miller and Mrs. Irwin Truhn on baked goods, and eighth grade girls in charge of the fish pond. Clarence Snyder was in charge of the produce booth and Mrs. Charles Winters looked into the future for those wishing prophecy. POTATO HARVEST ENDS THIS WEEK NEAR BUCHANAN BUCHANAN, Nov.

6 The harvesting of the potato crop in this district will be completed this week. The average yield this year per acre is from 225 to 325 bushels. Fred Koenigshof, residing suthwest of Buchanan in Bertrand township, rated the most skillful potato raiser in south Berrien county, -reports a yield of 325 bushels per acre. He had 19 acres of potatoes which yielded a total late, 6,175 bushels. The quality of the potatoes is excellent this year although the yield is not as large that of year ago, which averaged over 400 bushels per acre.

Mr. Koenigshof has a storage cellar at his farm which will hold 6,500 bushels. Later the potatoes will be trucked to Chicago and other midwest markets. Other growers in this district who had large potato acreage are Ralph Sebasty and Clarence Cripe of Bertrand township. P.

KILGORE The Rev. Hugh B. Kilgore, Grand Rapids, will be the principal speaker at the First Christian church's annual Armistice banquet here next Wednesday evening, November 10. The Rev. Kilgore is a World war veteran, having served with the Canadian army.
