'KWCR on for holidays Only ONE more clue lett in the Belliston Norton Jewelry "FIND THE ROCK CONTEST" to take a three week break and have to start all over again in January." The station staff feel that by keeping the station operating they can retain the listeners they have and then continue the building process during winter quarter. There are many problems in keeping a student-run station on the air over a holiday period. Many KWCR personnel, like other WSC students, will be traveling dver the break period.

To make up for absent personnel, volunteers will be doubling up on shifts to keep the board manned tllllif if rrr LAUGHING GYPSY byFredDiehl For the first time since it began broadcasting in 1966, KWCR-FM will remain on the air during Christmas break and as a result, could have its most productive year, according to station manager Dave Sterling. Program director Vern Emmons explains why it is important for the station to stay on the air. "Fall quarter is always our audience-building period. After being off the air over the summer it's just like starting a new station. After working three months to build our audience, it's practically suicide for the station" Handicapped In the word "disability" there is always "ability," says LaMar Kap, Coordinator for Services for the Handicapped.

The resource center is located on the lower level, south side of the library for use of students and graduates alike. This office for the handicapped opened up a year ago and many students are not aware that they may receive supportative services such as counseling, tutoring, college orientation, career counseling and employment advice, as well as make use of electronic equipment for those with visual or hearing problems. Kap is a committee member of the National Convention of the American Council of the Blind; a for the station's 12-hour, seven-day-a-week schedule. In a normal-operating week about 32 people are required to do music shows, gather and broadcast the news, and take care of the daily paperwork of the station. During the three-week break, from December 12 through January 2, a total of 15 volunteer workers will attempt to do the job: Some' changes will be made in the program format to ease the burden of the holiday workers.

The station will be running their "weekend" format which concentrates on music mixed with short educational programs. News programming will be de-emphasized, according to news director Fred Diehl. The hour-long noon news and half-hour long afternoon news segments will be dropped. There will still be five minutes of national and state coverage every hour. Sports director Hobbie DeRooy will be doing live coverage of all the home varsity and junior varsity basketball games.

Music director Rex Leetham summed it up by saying, "The feedback we have received from the students and the community as a whole indicate that more people are listening to KWCR this year than ever before. By staying on the air and continuing to please our audience this will definitely be our best year."
