HANFORD DAILY SENTINEL HANTORD, CALIFORNIA. PAGE FOUR TUESDAY EVENING, AUGUST 17, 1943. Stanford Abandons Football; Santa Clara May Follow Suit San Francisco, Aug. 17 (UP) Organized conference football among the Far Western gridiron powers was dealt a heavy blow toduv with the announcement that Stanford University, seven times the Wests Rosebowl choice, was withdrawing from competition. Stanford's announcement that the big red would be unable to field a team this vear was followed by gloomy prospects expressed by Coaih Lawrence T.

(Buck) Shaw of Santa Clara, in recent vears the West's leading independent. He said the situation at Santa Clara was about the same as Stanford's. An ultimate decision by Santa Clara to withdraw from competition would leave the University of California virtually alone in the San Francisco bay area, except for service teams. California has home-andhome schedules with University of Southern California and California at Los Angeles, however. Shaw said the Santa Clara situation and prospects are not too good and that there should be an announcement in a few dajs." Action of Stanford University upset the southern conference schedule, since the Indians were slated to play two games each on a home and home basis with U.

S. C. and U. C. L.

with single games against California, Santa Clara, St. Mary's Pre-Flight, Del Monte Pre-Flight and University of San Francisco. Stanford graduate manager Al Masters announced that a survey of possible grid candidates by coach Marchmont (Marchy) Schwartz revealed only 16 players. Army students at the university are not permitted to engage in intercollegiate football. We simply cannot play the conference schedule, Masters said, adding that we cannot make a team with these 16 men, with only two or three back from last years squad.

Stanford thus became the first conference major team and second member to abandon football. Montana University quit the game last week for the duration. With the California-Stanford big game rivalry halted by war, the critical situation at Santa Clara also threatened to cancel the Broncos football program and thus suspend the little big game of St. Marys and Santa Clara, one of the Wests outstanding annual contests. Jirflmy Needles, USF coach, announced the Dons will go ahead with football as planned.

He said they will fill in someone else to replace Stanford on the schedule. $40,000 Rookie Impresses In DodgersJ)ebuf By Jack Cuddy New York. Aug. 17 (UP) Howie Schultz, the $40,000 St. Paul steeple, certainly rang the bell in his unveiling at Ebbets Field.

Young Schultz, who towers six feet, 6' 2 inches, made a quick stretch from the American Association to the National League in such impressive fashion that Lippo Leo Durocher was left speechless (at last!) without words to describe properly the promise of his new' Dodger first baseman. High Ilowie, who never saw a major league game before, arrived from the St. Paul club yesterday. Immediately he was given the double barreled test of fielding against the sharp hitting, fast running Cardinals and of batting against the champions ace righthander, Mort Cooper. The 21 year old rookie, who was imported to succeed popular Dolph Camilli (now wivered and retired), proved surprisingly proficient at bat and on the bag, despite his bean pole appearance.

He collected a double and a single in four times against Cooper, Murry Dickson and Ernie White. Meanwhile, afield, the giraffe displayed Gazil-lian traits. While the crowd of 8,307 cheered the newcomer with Brooklyn fervor, baseball experts began comparing him with long George Kelly, another right handed first baseman of similar build and altitude who was a spire of strength with the Giants from 1921 to 24 and who now coaches the Braves. After Schultz and his Dodger mates had beaten the Cards, 7-3, the taffy-thatched rookie told reporters in the dressing room, Sure I was nervous when I first went out on the field. And I was lucky to come through all right.

No, I didnt notice much difference between todays pitching and that in the American Association. But I did notice the difference in running. Say those Cards sure can travel! RESTITUTION ORDERED Buffalo, N. Aug. 17 (UP) jTodd V.

Pettigrew. 56, Tucson, mining engineer, was under I order today, to make restitution of $15,000 to persons he was accused of defrauding in stock deals and also pay a line of $5000 for violating the Securities and Exchange Act. Angels Certain To Win Coast League Honors By United Press The Los Angeles Angels, who could lose half the remaining games on their schedule and still win the Pacific Coast league pennant, opened their series with the Hollywood Stars at the Angels home park Tuesday. In San Francisco, the second place Seals met Oakland, the sixth place holder. As far as Oakland is concerned, the Seals place next to Los Angeles is unassailable, but the mathematical chance exists that Seattle could overhaul them.

Seattle, with 26 games lett to play and the last nine of them against Los Angeles, opened against Sacramento at the Capitol city, very likely content to extend its two game hold on third place without thought of shaking the Seals out of second. San Diego mixecf with Portland at San Diego. Babcock Test Fat Is Glycerine Source San Francisco, Aug. 17 A new source of glycerine, essential in manufacture of munitions, is reported by Sam Greene, manager of California Dairy Council. It is the residual fat from the Babcock test for milkfat made at every milk and dairy processing plants.

Heretofore this residue of fat has gone down the sew'er. Credit for the patriotic suggestion goes to Eugene Abbott of Fresno, milk tester for one of the big milk companies. Realizing the value of the suggestion, California Dairy Council has issued a poster urging milk testers to save the Babcock test fat. WATCH and CLOCK REPAIRING Work Guaranteed FAST SERVICE MANUEL L. Frifzie Zivic May Retire At End of'43 Pittsburgh. Aug. 17 (UP) Former welterweight champion Fritzie Zivic, who has more things on the fire at one time than an army cook, disclosed today that he was considering retiring at the er.d of 1943 after 13 busy years in the beak busting business. But Fritrie. a crafty ringman with a squeaky oice, is no sucker.

So he'll continue to fight if the pickings continue as easy as they have been the past two years. It all depends on how I make out this year." he said I think I will retire, but I can't say definitely. If the boys start pushing me around too much, then I'll quit because I don't want to end up slap happy. One of the things he plans to do if and when he quits is to have that famous, punch twisted pub nose streamlined. Then he hopes to try his hand, and his new face, as master of ceremonies for a Pitts burgh night club at S300 a week.

At 30, Zivic isn't as sharp as he once was but he makes up this deficity through experience. In his last bout he methodically cut down Young Kid McCoy of Detroit, a tough youngster of 24. to score a four round TKO. Despite his age, Fritzie has been traveling at a terrific pace this year, participating in seven bouts, lie won four and lost three. He'll sandwich in two or three bouts before making a tour of the west coast in October.

Luke Carney (his late manager) would turn over in his grave if he knew the fast pace Im traveling. Zivic said. But I might as well make hay while I can. Zivics record is a tribute to his skill with the mittens. He started his professional career in 1931 and in 169 fights has won 126, sixty four by knockouts: lost 36, and drew in seven.

Only three time was he knocked out, by Laddie Tonelli in 1934. Milt Aron in 1939 and Ray (Sugar) Robinson in 1942 HEIRESS FUNERAL RITES Phoenix, Aug. 17 (UP) Funeral services for Mrs W. NOTICE TO CREDITORS Great Middle Class Hard Hit Financially New York, Aug. 17 The great middle class of white collar workers, small businessmen and others living on fixed incomes are paying more than their share of the financial costs of the war according to an analysis by Dr. Willford I.
