Blake's lawyer, Thomas Mesereau hammered away at Corwin's participation in the investigation and noted that Ito once introduced the author to a witness as "my partner." "When you did all these things did you expect the information (given to Corwin) to remain confidential?" Mesereau asked. "Yes," Ito replied. "Did you ever show him physical evidence?" Mesereau asked. "Yes," said Ito, who added he had shown the author letters, photographs and personal effects taken from Blake's home. He said he showed Corwin everything that had been turned over to police by Blake's original lawyer, Harland Braun.

"So the city of Los Angeles was paying you for all the time you spent giving information to this author," Mesereau said. "That's right," said Ito. At one point prosecutors tried to cut off the questioning, but Superior Court Judge Lloyd Nash refused to stop the inquiry.
