Expert repair furnace. Cost Seattle, Sept. An elaborate aerial defense system was disclosed today to be operating twenty-four hours a day in the Pacific Northwest. Every plane which takes off from a Pacific Northwest field or enters the area Is detected by radar and Identified at a control center. If Identification Is not established immediately armed interceptor planes are sent up.

It is partly practice, partly precautionary. Operation of the defense setup was reported today by the Seattle Times, the Everett, Herald and Representative Henry Jackson of Washington, Democrat. (r star' Jiffenon City Correiyondent.) Jefferson City, Sept. 26. The Western Electric company doea not ell to Southwestern Bell Telephone company at a profit higher than to non-Bell customers. It was brought out here today at a Missouri Public Service commission hearing. The statement was made by Harold R.

Blckett, chief statistician of Western Electric, at a hearing on a proposed 6-mlllion-dollar rate Increase. The company submitted Its direct testimony several weeks ago. Cross-examination began today by attorneys for Kansas City, St. Louis and other cities opposing the move and by Homer L. Thorpe, chief accountant for the commission.

The controlling Interest In Western Electric and the Bell system Is held by the parent company, the American Telephone and Telegraph company. Last year Western Electric sold more than 1 billion dollars worth of equipment, about 90 per cent going to the Bell system. Thorpe questioned Bickett on the connection between Western Electric and the Southwestern Bell firm and asked if the non-Bell customers bought from the manufacturing company at a lower cost than the Bell buyers. They do not, Bickett replied. Earlier Jerome Joffee, special utilities counsel for Kansas City, questioned Thomas Stevenson of St.

Louis, chief actuary for the telephone company, on the Southwestern Bell pension plan. The company contends the costs for the pension plan should be charged to operating expenses, and passed on to telephone users. The pension plan was established In 1913 and revised in 1927. Joffee contends that subscribers are being forced to pay past costs of the program. The pension plan involves about $200,000 in the increased rates.
