Musicians unite RED DEER ADVOCATE, Saturday, March 6, 1 993 C3 Unsolved Mysteries hopes to catch killer to honor Lightfoot in Ann Arbor, in November. McAllister provided information but wasnt involved in taping of the 10-minute segment. They told me that if I watch it on TV to make sure I've got someone there with me because it will bring back a lot of memories, said McAllister. Hell watch the show, to be broadcast Wednesday, with his son and daughter. Unsolved Mysteries which has broadcast 350 crime-related dramatizations says there are arrests in 17 per cent of its recreations when there is only a description of the suspect.

"This isnt the first show weve done about a highway rest stop so maybe it will serve as a warning to people that these can be dangerous places, producer Tim Rogan said from Burbank, Calif. The McAllisters were driving to a family reunion in Winnipeg when they stopped to sleep about 100 km east of Sault Ste. Marie. After knocking, the killer shot the couple, and then Major, before he fled. Police say they are looking for a blue van and a slightly built 30-year-old white man about six-feet tall with stringy blond hair.

By STEPHEN EWART of The Canadian Press TORONTO (CP) Gord McAllister, who survived a triple shooting that left his wife and a passerby dead, is hoping an Unsolved Mysteries dramatization helps resolve the 1991 killings. "When Unsolved Mysteries called it just seemed like we had nothing to lose and seeing it on TV might just revive someones memory," McAllister said from his home in Lindsay, Ont. The fellow playing the bad guy is a bang-on likeness. McAllister, now 64, was asleep with his wife, Jackie, in their camper at a secluded rest area along the Trans-Canada Highway near Blind River, Ont. A man, identifying himself as a police officer, knocked on their door about 1 a m.

June 28, 1991, and wounded McAllister and killed his wife in a robbery. Brian Major, 29, who apparently stumbled on the crime, was also shot dead. An exhaustive police investigation has turned up few good leads even though McAllister, who was shot in the back, provided a detailed description of the gunman. The dramatization was taped HALIFAX (CP) In a windowless recording studio in mid-town Halifax, singer Lennie Gallant slips on a set of headphones and steps up to the big boom microphone. As a fretless bass and an acoustic guitar set the mood, Gallant closes his eyes to begin Gordon Lightfoots 1967 classic, Song for a Winters Night.

All across the country in recent weeks, young Canadian artists have been joining in the ritual. A dozen musicians are recording timeless Lightfoot tunes for a tribute album. "The whole idea of the project is for people to reinterpret (Lightfoots) songs, Gallant says from his Halifax home. "Youre not trying to better the songs its like taking the songs for a drive on a new highway. As one of Canadas most influential and prolific songwriters of the 1960s and 70s, Lightfoot created a legacy of powerful folk music.

Gallant, a native of Prince Edward Island, sees the tribute album as a passing of the torch from one generation to the next. "It honors the artist and shows some appreciation for the influence hes had on people. It can also inform a new generation of listeners about what (his songwriting) is about. "Theres a generation that grew up on pop music that havent a clue what Lightfoots songs were about. Last year, similar albums were recorded by contemporary bands in tribute to the music of Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Bruce Cockburn.

Canadian groups played all the songs on the latter two. The Lightfoot project was started over a year ago by Bill Stunt, a CBC Radio producer in Ottawa. There isnt a single Canadian artist who doesnt owe a debt to Lightfoot, says Stunt. "This recording has generated an enormous groundswell of interest and its amazing the number of people who wanted to get involved. Leslie Spit Treeo (singing Black Day in July), Three Sheets to the Wind (The Way I Feel), Moxy Fruevous (Early Morning Rain), Junkhouse (Oh, Linda), Grapes of Wrath with Lava Hay (Bend Me Down) and Stephen Fearing (Canadian Railway Trilogy) are confirmed for the project.

Mark Jordan, Voice of Boom and David Wiffen will also contribute. Stunt says the album should be released in April as a CBC Variety Recording CD with an initial limited pressing of 500 to 1,000 copies, distributed only to CBC stations and possibly some commercial stations. But hes left the door open for wider distribution if demand warrants. What makes Lightfoots music so popular and so enduring? "He came around at a time when Canada was trying to find some identity, says Gallant. Lightfoot provided a style of songwriting that reflected the country and the people and the landscape, particularly at that time.

A native of Orillia, Lightfoot was singing in a duo called the Two-Tones in 1962. He recorded a couple of pop-country sides for ABC Records in the United States but was getting lost in a sea of similar acts. So Lightfoot moved to England, where he hosted a country music program on BBC Radio. By the time he returned to Canada in 1964, Bob Dylan had turned the folk music world upside-down, making it fashionable to perform original songs. The era of the singer-songwriter was born, and Lightfoot was a natural.

While the curly-haired singer dominated Torontos vibrant Yorkville folk club scene, his songs were being recorded by big-time stars. Peter, Paul and Mary, Marty Robbins, George Hamilton IV and Ian and Sylvia all recorded versions of the young songwriters tunes. Now a new generation is discovering the power of his music. Lightfoot, 53, and his record company may have anticipated a new boom in popularity. Late last year, Capitol Records released The Original Lightfoot, a three-CD compilation of his music from 1965 to 1969.

AP) Talk about top billing. Arnold Schwarzeneggers name and the title of his soon-to-be-released movie Last Action Hero will be emblazoned on a rocket bound for space this spring. Columbia Pictures is paying $500,000 US for the far-flung advertisement, which no one will see once the rocket lifts off. Our judgment was that would be worth it, said Mark Gill, senior vice-president of publicity for Columbia Pictures. You see 10 billboards on your way to work every day, Im sure.

Thats not unusual. Whats unusual is something that breaks through all that clutter, and this certainly does that. It will be the first time a U.S. space vehicle has been launched with advertisements. The Russians have been advertising in space for years.

Three companies involved in the NASA-supported Conestoga rocket launch chose Columbia Pictures as the advertiser. Schwarzeneggers name will cover the six outer booster rockets, and the fuselage of the main, 15-metre rocket will read Last Action Hero in red, orange and yellow. The payload, a science satellite, also will bear the logo for the movie, a Lethal Weapon-style action-adventure that comes out in June. Schwarzenegger will attend the launch, Gill said. The unmanned rocket will lift off from a NASA installation at Wallops Island, as early as March 31.
