THE ADVOCATE, Friday, November 1, 1985 3B Film footage gathered secretly By DARCY RICKARD of The Advocate A Red Deer native now living in Israel with her husband say they gathered footage secretly in Moscow and Leningrad for a film on the plight of Soviet Jews. Meridel Rawlings said she and her husband Jay travelled by subway and bus to reach Jewish homes in 1983. They communicated by writing questions on slips of paper which were immediately burned by the interviewees. These interviews, clandestinely taken and smuggled out, formed the core of this film, said Mr. Rawlings, a native of Victoria, B.C.

They said they were able to get the footage out of the USSR through a complex network of co-operation. Their 16-mm, 54-minute docu-drama, Gates of Brass, will be shown at the Memorial Centre at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Edmonton-Strathcona MP David Kilgour will also attend. Two days after their film Gates of Brass premiered in Israel this summer, one of the Jews interviewed, Alex Zeli-chonek, was arrested and subsequently sentenced to three years imprisonment, said Mrs.
