Slippers crippled HONOLULU (AP) In a locked case in Miller Hall at the University of Hawaii are several teacup-size slippers, covered with infinitely small embroidery stitches. In them is the story of more than a thousand years of the intentional crippling of young daughters of the aristocracy and the eventual loss of sight of the women who did the "forbidden stitch' embroidery, finally outlawed because it damaged the eyesight. Tiny shippers like these were worn on the bound feet of Chinese women for hundreds of generations, deforming their feet into what was called "the golden lotus." Three pairs are part of the Asian Costume Collection at the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. Most of the collection is in an air-conditioned basement vault. A few pieces are displayed in hallway cases.

"We have to keep the collection in storage because we have no place to exhibit it," says Mary Ellen Des Jarlais, a professor and curator of the collection. "We bring samples into class for students' research purposes, but handling causes deterioration of the fragile fabrics." Among the treasures assembled is a tiny rose and green slipper, 7.5 centimetres long. "It was probably put on when the girl was about 6," Des Jarlais said. "After that, the bones could no longer be bent into what they called the 'golden with four toes clamped under the big toe and the arch of the foot." Foot binding is usually dated back to the court of Emperor Li Yu of the late Tang dynasty, A.D. 900.

He insisted that his court daneers bind their feet into an arch so that they would walk on tiptoe with a seductive sway Binding of feet was outlawed by the Manchus during the 18th century. Despite the crippling and the pain, the custom survived through the first years of the Communist regime that began in 1949.
