Diana May Adorn Arch Of Manhattan Bridge That an appropriate location for he Saint-Gaudens Diana, which now crowns the tower of the Madison Square Garden, about to be demolished, would be over the arch at the Manhattan entrance to the Manhattan Bridge, was the suggestion embodied letter written yesterday by William Wirt Mills, Commissioner of the Department of Plant and Structures, to Darwin P. Kingsley, president of the New York Life Insurance Company, which controls the destinies of the old Garden. Commissioner Mills wrote, in part, as follows.

"It seems to me that the people of the City of New York constitute the group that ought to be most interested in the preservation of this statue, and that the most appropriate disposition of this work of art would be the entrusting of it to the City of New York for re-erection in a suitable and conspicuous location where it might he maintained by the city. We have such a location, which think will find admirable, on the arch you at the Manhattan entrance to the Manhattan Bridge." DAVIS SENTENCE OFF TO FRIDAY; COUNSEL ABSENT Justice Carswell Fixes March 20 on Request of Herbert Smyth. Supreme Court Justice Carswell today postponed until Friday the imposition of sentence upon Charles T.

Davis, wealthy manufacturer of surgical instruments, convicted last week on a charge of second degree murder. The postponement was granted at the request of Davis's counsel, Herbert C. Smyth, who is out of town. Davis shot and killed Detective Joseph Bridgetts when Bridgetts went to Davis's office to investigate the theft of an automobile which had at one time belonged to Davis. Davis was declared insane soon aftor the killing, on February 17, 1921, and was committed to the Asylum for the Criminal Insane at Matteawan, N.

Four firemen, members of the newly organized Rescue Squad No. 2, were overcome by smoke when! they were trapped on the third floor it a fire that damaged the threestory brick warehouse of the Bard Rag Company, at 133 Furman street. early today. The fire, of undetermined origin, was discovered by a watchman, and two alarms were sent in when it was feared the blaze, would spread.

Hundreds of persons! living in the vicinity went to the street, and a large crowd gathered to watch the firemen in their fight. The firemen overcome were Captain Walter A. O'Leary, Firemen William Dougherty, Edward mings and Anthony Zurmo, Captain O'Leary was removed to the Cumberland Street Hospital, but the other firemen remained on duty after. treatment at the scene by an ambulance surgeon from the Long Island College Hospital. All four men were rescued by companions, who carried the inert forms down ladders to the street.

The four firemen who were overcome constituted the vanguard. of the Rescue Squad and they groped their way through heavy smoke on the third floor, seeking windows which they wanted to open. Firemen John Zoblitny, George, Hedermen and Henry Hertzenberger, following the first four men, saw their companions fall and they summoned the assistance of other firemen. The four men overcome were carried to the window and passed out to men standing on ladders in front of the building, and were carried down to the street. Quantities of rags and other junk stored in the building threw off large volumes of smoke, which filled the entire neighborhood.

It was nearly an hour before firemen succeeded in getting the fire under control. Youths Smash Glass, Get $5,000 Tray of Gems Two young and well dressed men last night hurled two bricks wrapped in newspapers through the plate glass window of a jewelry store conducted by William F. Linderman, of 435 Knickerbocker avenue, and took a display tray containing forty-five diamond rings having a total value of about $5,000. They escaped in a touring car which they had parked on Himrod street at Knickerbocker avenue, according to the story the proprietor told the police. Linderman was seated in the store reading a newspaper when he heard the crash of breaking glass.

As he looked toward. the show window he saw a pair of hands seize the tray and quickly disappear with it. rushed to the street, in time to see men enter an automobile and speed away, The police obtained the license number of the automobile from bystanders, but said they believed it to be fictitious. New Haven Firm Gets Lease on Army Base Washington, March War Department announces today that a contract had been closed with Frank Kenna, of New Haven, Conn, for rental of the army base at Newark, N. for ten years.

The net amount which the dopartments expects to realize from the contract for the ten-year period will be about $4,000,000, received on a graduated annual scale. The property represents an investment. of approximately 000, embraces 2,000,000 square feet of covered storage and 3,800 feet of pier space, with thirty feet of water. It is a complete storage and shipping plant, covering 136 acres of ground. New York Firm Gets Contract at Harvard Cambridge, March 18.

Harvard University officials have awarded to Hegeman-Harris Company, New of York, the the new contract, for construction of business, and work will begin at once, it was announced today.
