WA 3-2241 ON LUNCH HOUR One of Nation's Biggest Robberies Is in a Crowd New York (AP) Two unmasked bandits accosted a Wall Street messenger amid a lunch hour crowd in the financial district yes-- terday and robbed him of an estimated $2,800,000 in "stocks and bonds. Owners of the certificates described them as negotiable but a New York Stock exchange spokesman said converting them to cash would be most difficult, although not impossible. 35,000 Shares Nearly 35,000 shares of stock were included in the loot among them such blue chips as Cities Service, Ford Motor company, Detroit Edison, National lead and Pepsi Cola. Counting the certificates at face value, the daring daylight holdup ranked with the nations biggest robberies. In 1962.

the largest rash robbery in U. S. history netted $1 551.277 from a U. S. mail truck near Plymouth, Mass.

In the Brink's holdup in Boston 15 years ago. a gang got $2,775,395 of which $1,216,211 was in cash. The stocks and bonds were owned by Goodbody and company, of 2 Broadway, near the Battery on Manhattans lower tip. They were being transferred to a Wall Street bank as collateral for a loan. The certificates in a brown envelope were being delivered by Gerald Mulcahy, 18, Hoboken, N.

a messenger for a brokerage delivery service. Halfway to Destination Mulcahy told police he was accosted about 1:15 oclock at Exchange place and New street, about halfway to his Wall Street destination. The messenger said one robber placed a solid object against his back and commanded: This is a sticl Keep quiet! The youth said he was forced into a hallway and relieved of the envelope.
