After the game was over Fischer told the man who -taught him the moves of the game when he was a boy in Brooklyn, N.Y., that it will settle down.

Really Bad Day minutes while his clock continued to devour time. He returned to continue toe struggle, making his 44th move, an ineffectual sidestep with his king. Hopeless Struggle In ensuing play all the 1awns on toe kings side were ost Fischer shifted his king in a hopeless struggle to toe other side of the board, where two of his pawns and two of Spasskys blocked each others passage. Fischer couldnt unblock because Spasskys bishop could protect his position from long range. Finally, after Spasskys 58th move his king approached toe jam on toe at the outset of the 24-game match, Fischer developed some more money trouble.

News from London was that James Slater, who sweetened the pot with 50,000 pounds about $120,00 wouldnt be able to get his money out of England because of currency restrictions. Slaters donation, which pushed the total prize money to $300,000, enticed Fischer to end his holdout at the scheduled start of the match July 2. Asked about Slaters prob-. lem, Fischer -snapped, No comment. A Lost Cause The play lasted only one hour and three minutes.

It was the continuation of a game begun Tuesday and ad- SPiSSXY Itiiti) Associated Press Wirephote Here is final positioning at end of first game of 24-game world chess championships at Reykjavik, Iceland, Wednesday. It was a bad day all around for the 29-year-old American. In addition to conceding Spassky a 1-0 lead in the score journed after 40 moves with Fischer in a position the experts said would give him only a draw at best. Spassky had his king, a bishop that controlled toe black diagonals and three pawns. Fischer was down to his king and five pawns, two of them loose on toe kings side.

One of Spasskys pawns threatened a Fischer pawn when play concluded Tuesday night In the first move Wednesday, Spassky captured the pawn. Fischer recaptured with his king and the game turned into an effort by Fischer to push his pawns a square at a time to toe last king. Walks Offstage Suddenly after five minutes of play and indecisive sparring, Fischer stood, spoke animatedly to chief referee Lotoar Schmid of West Germany and disappeared with his long rolling gait through the beige curtains offstage left. Fischer strode to his back-stage dressing room where he told Schmid, who followed him, that he wouldnt continue play unless a movie camera 150 feet from toe chess board was ordered shut off. It was barely visible from where Fischer sat.

Schmid said he couldnt order toe camera re-. moved. Fischer stayed away for 30 Chess Fans Baffled By Fischers Losing Play Tanks Take Hilltop Viets Retreat At Quang Tri Vietnamese troops backed by tanks attacked government paratroopers on the southwestern flank and drove them off their hilltop positions. The enemy occupied the outposts, and the troopers called in air strikes to blast the despite heavy bombing and shelling as the 20, 000-man South Vietnamese drive into Quang Tri Province entered its third week. Associated Press correspondent Dennis Neeld reported from the northern front that several hundred North SAIGON (AP) Enemy forces struck Wednesday at the vital southwest flank of South Vietnamese troops battling around the provincial capital of Quang Tri, forcing a retreat.

North Vietnamese forces remained entrenched in the city OUm Vftiiximif) 000 08o 0Ol50 N.Y. Wants Dog Tattoos International Master Edward Lasker, 86, studied a large wall board with magnetic pieces. Slapping a pawn here and a bishop there with bewildering speed, toe gray-haired chess expert kept trying to figure a way that Fischer might salvage a likely loss to a drawn game. Black Couldn't Win One, two, three, four, Dr. Lasker said 'as he counted, possible moves, No, said, realizing that Spasskys white pieces could overtake Fischers defensive black pieces.

To tell the truth, he told a dozen avid fans in the federalist style building where the club makes its home in lower Manhattan, I dont see where this can possibly be drawn unless white doesnt make toe right moves. White, it turned out, did make all toe right moves, and Fischer conceded defeat. He thus gave Spassky one point. The Soviet champion needs 12 points to retain the world title, and Fischer needs 12 points to capture it. And at the Marshall club, toe boards were cleared for new play as soon as toe announcement came.

The games over, said a member who learned of the results by telephone. He gave it up, NEW YORK (AP) Bobby Fischers clock was running out of time when a fellow member asked the Marshall Chess Clubs champion player how things were going for toe world championship challenger. It looks bad, said George Kane, 23, vainly seeking a solution to Fischers dilemma. Looks bad. Huddle Over Boards Elsewhere in Manhattan and in Boston, Kansas City, Birmingham, and San Francisco chess enthusiasts huddled over chess tables to analyze Fischers losing play.

The question arose again and again: Why did one of the worlds greatest chess players fall victim to an apparent ploy by taking Boris Spasskys so-called poisoned pawn on his 29th move? That is toe main question, said Stephen Brandwein, 29, across the board from Kane. His style is to play risky but not that risky. It really looks hopeless. He'll Come Back At toe Birmingham Chess Club, Charles Smith said, Our feelings are that over the long period of 24 games, Fischer will overcome any loss he may sustain and eventually will win. Members of the Marshall club agreed, citing victories as far back as 1954 and noting world champions who had lost the first or second game in a match.

Fischer himself, they said, has been a first game loser. )u iimnJ sjnnq.i eru to U.S. Not Bending WASHINGTON (AP) The State Department Wednesday labeled as totally without foundation a news account from Peking saying the United States may be prepared to make a significant concession at the Paris talks. Spokesman Charles W. Bary gave this response when asked about the Peking-date-lined account, which was attributed to unnamed diplomatic sources.

At the same time, Bray did not answer directly a question as to whether the United States would be putting forward any new offers at the reopening negotiations in Paris. At least three North Vietnamese T54 tanks were reported knocked out by wire-guided missiles. Initial reports made no mention of casualties on either side. The southwestern flank of the operation is considered. vital because allied officers have been concerned since the beginning of the drive that toe North Vietnamese might attempt to circle around behind the task force and attack Hue, 32 miles to toe southeast.

Other battles raged on the northern, eastern and southern sides of Quang Tri City. Government forces claimed to have killed more than 40 enemy and knocked out nine tanks. South Vietnamese casualties were put at two killed and 24 wounded in early reports. The government units were reported under continuous artillery fire. i Allied spokesmen said a U.S.
