That was the case Thursday night when the North All-Stars dismantled the South's pressing defense en route to a 123 102 win in the annual AAAA-AAA high school All Star basketball game at University Arena. In the small schools' game, the South broke a three game losing streak by pulling away in the second half to a UO-W victory. The win was the first for the Rebels in the four-year history of the AA A game. In the AAAA-AAA game, the South was a decided underdog and the North wasted little time taking command.

The game plan was simple break the South press, take the high percentage shot and then defense the Rebels' quickness. "I thought we could use the press," said North Coach Vince Cordova after the easy victory by the Yanks. "The kids did a great job of breaking to the basket and keeping things organised." ihtting on 64 percent of its shots in the first half, the North mounted a 70- SUN. 9:00 It Necessity Five team field LOSERS 5 1 SUNDAY 5:00 50 halftime lead and it appeared then that the single game scoring mark of 123 points set by the South team of 1975 was in jeopardy. The North gunners slowed down in the second half, but they still managed to equal the scoring mark.

With this group we were able to do jast about anything we wanted to," said Albuquerque Sandia's Rich Strong, the frfoot-8 center who will enroll at Colorado State this fall. Strong led the North scoring with 29 points and pulled down 18 rebounds while Albuquerque Highland guard Ralph Contreras had a sparkling game that included 18 points with a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and two free throws. David Lell of Sandia with 16 points and Mike Leyba of Bernalillo with 12 also finished in double figures as the game's outcome was never in doubt after the first half. Cordova was able to give Strong resting time by playing the imposing 6-foot-8, 240-pound William Love of Highland. Love blocked five South shots, pulled down eight rebounds and contributed eight points.

"When I went in for Rich, I tried to do my job inside, said Love, explaining that meant rebounding and setting up brick wall-like screens for his teammates. The South was led in scoring by Lovington's Dwight Barry and Alamogordo's Brian Soistman, both of whom scored 14 points. Another Alamogordo player, James Anderson added 13. The Rebels Tony Benford, the former Hobbs High School star who was named Player of The Year in New Mexico after last season, never was a factor. Benford, who is headed for Texas Tech in the fall, got only two points in the first half and finished with 12 before fouling out late in the game.

University President Rev. John LoSchiavo said the action, taken because of continuous rules violations dating to 1979, was necessary to save the school's reputation as an institution of higher learning.

Although the decision was based on a series of violations over several years, the catalyst appeared to be the Quintin Dailey case. Dailey's problems began when he was charged with assaulting a student nurse and ended with revelations that the All-America guard received as much as $5,000 in under-the-table payments from a wealthy alumnus. There was no immediate word on the fate of head coach Pete Barry. The stunning announcement ended a program that began in 1924 and peaked with consecutive national championships in 1955 and 1956 by a team featuring All-America center Bill Russell and K.C. Jones.

As a Division I basketball power, the Dons reached the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament Final Four three times and were selected for the national playoffs 14 times, including the past two years. During its 58-year history, the school compiled an 869-467 record, a remarkable accomplishment for a small private school with an enrollment of about 7,000 this year. Anyone who is familiar with this institution and its proud history will understand what a painful decision this is, said LoSchiavo. The decision was limited to men's basketball and will not affect school's other programs, including women's basketball. In 1979, the NCAA Committee on Infractions nailed the university on recruiting violations over a period of six years and placed the basketball program on probation for one year, with sanctions prohibiting post-season competition.

The following year, the university's basketball program was charged with recruiting violations, placed on one year probation and blocked from postseason play. The school was on unsanctioncd probation" last year, meaning it could appear in tournament action. After being placed on probation the second time, basketball coach Dan Bclluomini, his assistant and the director of athletics were fired. San Francisco then hired Barry as coach and stressed its determination to build its program by staying within the rules. But Barry has now been implicated in the latest round of nasty allegations Involving Dailey, drafted by the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association after deciding to skip his senior year.
