PAGE DEMING HEADLIGHT THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1, HEADLIGHT on Sports Fabens dumps Deming 56-50 Texas 'Cats hand local 'Cats loss Headlight Sports Editor Deming High varsity, basketball coach Dick Pool termed his team's opening-season game against Fabens, Texas as, "an important game to win to start out the year." This was viewed by the fact that Deming would follow that first game through a gauntlet of murderer's row. The likes of Las Cruces Mayfield, Douglas, Arizona, Tularosa (twice) and El Paso Bowie. A 56-50 defeat in Fabens last night saw the Wildcats drop that important opener in a fashion not characteristic of a Wildcat team. Coach Pool made no excuses and said, We just got beat on the boards (rebounding) and did not play like we had been all summer long." Deming began the game in a testy way and was able to capture two leads in the first half. The Fabens Wildcats were quick to make up the distance and led at the end of each quarter.

If one aspect of the game can be singled out as the key to Deming's Fabens steals victory from Deming jayvees Deming jayvee Wildcats ran into a sleeper of a Fabens B-team when they were upset 58-48 in their seaosn opener Wednesday night in Texas. The 'Cats found the action to be in their favor throughout the game's first three quarters. Deming held a 44- 38 lead when play began in the final period. The next eight minutes saw a Fabens blitz that took advantage of a Wildcat defensive breakdown and outscored the Deming team 20-4 in the period to overtake the lead and the game. "The last four minutes of the ballgame was the last time we led in the game.

It wasn't so much us getting cold on offense, as it was our defense falling apart. We gave up too many easy uncontested layups," said head jayvee coach Keith Leupold. The shooting percentages by halves took a drastic plunge. Deming shot an impressive 41 percent in the first half and then dropped to 22 percent in the all-important second half. Scoring for the jayvee 'Cats was led by Joel Wilson's nine points.

He also collected seven rebounds in the game. Fernando Holguin and Kevin Fields totaled eight points apiece and Kevin Hanna added six. Fields contributed with six rebounds. Michael Chavez scored five and Gilbert Orsoco and John David Smith hit for four each. Julian Morales added two and Tanner Green and Chris Quarrell chipped in with one point each.

Green led the team in rebounding with 10 caroms. The game at the charity stripe told the tale. Fabens cashed in on 10 of 22 concession baskets, while Deming made good on only six of 22 attempts. The rebounding was a slight mismatch. Fabens walked away with a 47-35 rebounding edge.

"We played poorly," Pool said. "It was clear that our inside game is not there yet. I got a complete game from only two boys on the team. And you know, you don't win ballgames with just two players." Deming never established control throughout the entire ballgame. The local 'Cats made a couple of runs at a 10-point Fabens margin, but could not put together enough back-to-back points to take charge.

Pool credited this to playing against a senior-laden Fabens team. "They were much more mature than us and it showed in the second half," said Pool. With less than four minutes in the final period, Deming got their big chance. Trailing by 12, three straight baskets by Mike Viramontes, Alpha Adkins and John Creamer cut the margin to six. A Fabens time out had both teams swap baskets and the 'Cats trailed Fabens 51-44 with less than two minutes to play.

Creamer came up with a steal on the press and spotted Adkins alone under the basket. Adkins went up for the lay in and was fouled on the shot. The shot fell threw the hoop and Adkins was credtied with a foul shot and a chance to tie the game with 1:30 to go in the game. The shot missed and Fabens took care of the ball for the final 1:30 of the game. They were content in going to the foul line and sinking the game away.

The 56-50 defeat is only a hard lesson to be learned in the tough schedule that is still instore as the Wildcat season progresses. Las Cruces Mayfield will send a senior-dominated Trojan team to Deming on Friday and nothing but revenge will be on their minds. They will bring back harsh memories of their losses to Deming last season. A double overtime heartbreaker and a 20-point blowout in the finals of last year's Deming Invitational Tournament. Coach Pool will try to match up with a much bigger Class AAAA power that stands in with a front line of 6-9, 6- 7, and 6-5.

Pool commented on the upcoming game, "It's going to be tough to prepare and matchup with Mayfield on such short notice. Holmes, 34, had said Tuesday night he planned to retire, and that an announcement would be made either next week or sometime in the near future. On Wednesday, however, he said through Dick Lovell, the publicity aide, that while he was thinking of retirement, he also was considering fighting Greg Page, the top-ranked WBC contender, and or Gerrie Coetzee, the World Boxing Association champion.

Also on Wednesday, a news conference scheduled for Holmes' hotel in Phillipsburg, N.J., was canceled. But today Lovell said the news conference has been rescheduled because Holmes 3 "wants to clear up a lot of things. He's going to talk about the WBC and the WBA and (promoter) Don King. He's going to discuss what his plans are." King has said Holmes' retirement would give other fighters a chance at the title, just the way the retirement of Muhammad Ali helped Holmes' career. "This is just like the retirement of the legendary Muhammad Ali," said King.

"People predicted the demise of boxing then. But boxing flourished. It will be likewise with Larry Holmes. It will allow others in the shadows a chance to gain fame, acclaim and affluence. Boxing will continue to flourish and I will be a part of it." King, who has promoted many of the 17 title defenses Holmes has made in the last years, said, "It's The following bowling results are from the week of November 25, 1983, at the Desert Sands Bowling Lanes: FRIDAY MIXED MATES LEAGUE.
