Murray, Pinsent win ACTRA awards TORONTO (CP) Radio writers and personalities swept five of the seven Association of Canadian Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) awards given at the association's second annual awards dinner.

Singer Anne Murray and actor-writer Gordon Pinsent won the others--hers for her television specials, and his for his film. The Rowdyman. The award-winners were: The Earle Grey Award for the best performance by an actor or actress- Gordon Pinsent. Other finalist nominees were Jon Granik. narrator in a number of CBC-TV documentaries, and Deborah Turnbull for her performance in the CBC-TV drama Peace of Utrecht.

Best Variety PerformerAnne Murray. Other finalist nominees were comedienne Barbara Hamilton. and the team of Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster. Best Public Affairs Broadcaster- Peter Gzowski. host of CBC radio's This Country in the Morning.

All the awards, except the Drainie Award. were made on the basis of votes by ACTRA members. Winner of the Drainie award is selected by the previous winners.

Pierre Berton was master of ceremonies for the awards and said the remarkable number of radio personalities nominated and elected for the awards showed radio was not dead. In terms of service to radio, Kaplan was clearly the dean. He began in the days of the crystal set and joined the CBC soon after it was founded, directing radio drama. SIMPLE THANK- Max Ferguson said of his award that it was almost incumbent upon him to be outspoken. and say, "shove it." but all he could say was a simple thank-you.

Peter Gzowski said it was unnecessary for him to thank the 14 others on his show that helped him. since they were all members of other radio unions. Gordon Pinsent said he covets awards of all kinds because back home in Newfoundland. in his childhood. nobody ever had any award or knew how to make one.

The awards banquet was mainly a light-hearted event. but Earle Grey -who was president of ACTRA's fore-runner in the lean years of the -said all should remember they are first of all artists. He also said greater credit should be given to writers of drama comedy, for every show begins with someone sitting down to a blank piece of paper. "In the beginning was the word." he quoted the Bible. do not get the rewards they should get," he said.
