Friday Evening, May 31, 1957. Farmers' Share in Food Dollar Shows No Change From Year Ago WASHINGTON (UP)—The farm- •r's share ot the consumer food dollar for the first three months of 1957 was 39 cents—the same .as a year ago—despite increases in both farm and retail prices, the Agriculture Department reported today. An Increase in marketing charges on farm-produced foods kept the farmer's share from getting any larger. Marketing charges—the middleman's take—were 4 per cent higher in the first quarter than in the lame period in 1056, the department said in its publication, "The Marketing and Transportation Situation." This increase resulted partly from bigger food purchases by consumers but also from purchases of more expensive food and more marketing services. Consumers spent 25 per cent of their disposable income for food in 1956. Food of the same type and quantity as they bought in 1935-39 would have taken only 16 per cent of their income, the department said.
