5). -T-H photo by William ing KILO Martin in finale Standings MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) Todd Martin undermined Stefan Edberg's serveand-volley game today, winning three tiebreakers to set up an all-American final at the Australian Open. Martin, seeded ninth and playing in his first Grand Slam semifinal, defeated the fourthseeded Swede 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-4) in 3 hours, 50 minutes. In Sunday's championship match, Martin will face the winner of the semifinal between top-seeded Pete Sampras and two-time defending champion Jim Courier. Though Martin converted only four of his 17 break points against Edberg, he was at his best in the tiebreakers.

"I returned really well, especially in streaks," he said. "That's sometimes the best way to do it." Edberg, whose right knee was treated early in the match for a minor tendon strain, was overwhelmed at times by the power of Martin's backhand returns. "I played a decent match," said Edberg, a two-time Australian Open champion. "I think I could have served a little better today. He did put pressure on me by returning well.

He took chances and did well on the big points." Martin, whose best previous Grand Slam performance before this was the quarterfinals at last summer's Wimbledon, got stronger as the match went along. He missed several passing shots, by inches in the first set, Australian Open when Edberg used lobs to strand the American at the net. Those passing shots, however, began hitting during the second set. Martin led the second set 5-3, but lost three straight games before capturing the 12th game and the tiebreaker. Edberg saved three set points in the third-set tiebreaker, including one easy putaway at the net that Martin slammed way long.

But Martin prevailed on his fourth set point, passing Edberg with a forehand shot and punching the air in triumph. Martin also won the fourth set in a tiebreaker, though it took four match points to finish off Edberg. On the final point, he slammed an ace down the middle, then hit a ball high into the stands and raised his arms in triumph. Until then, the 23-year-old from Lansing, never varied from his mild-mannered ways. He apologized after almost hitting a ballboy with a shot, and lifted his finger to his mouth to quiet a spectator who yelled happily after an Edberg double-fault.

Yesterday, Gabriela Sabatini stood helplessly at the back of the court as drop shots landed just on her side of the net. She lunged in vain for angled crosscourt shots that skipped by her for winners. Arantxa Sanchez Vicario came late in the match when she turned her back to the net after hitting a ball out. Starting tonight, all University of Hawaii sports will be on KFVE-TV, an independent Honolulu station operating in conjunction with TV (FOX-13). Jones Spacelink of Hawaii is carrying KFVE on its channel 5, causing the move of WTBS to cable channel 13 and bumping the Home Shopping Network to channel 37.

KFVE (nicknamed Home Team 5) will feature exclusive TV coverage of Rainbow sports, FAMILY- From Page 11 summer league ball, he's improved his play. and filled out lot," Tam said. "He looks like he he got bigger "If he hits, he'll be all right." Unlike Napuunoa and Mattson, Ahu and Tam played together rather than against each other while growing up. "Since we were small, 5 or 6 years old, we've played together," Ahu said. Said Tam: "This is the first time I've really played against him.

We've been on the same IRVIN- From Page 11 you don't need any extra motivation," he said, rubbing his hands together gleefully. "The game tells you everything. You play this game because it's a chance to make history. "I know a lot of guys in the NFL and how many times do you get a chance to play in this game? Not many have had a chance to play in it let alone a chance to talk about winning." Irvin is wearing sunglasses, and even though you can't see his eyes, you can feel them sparkle. Irvin was a first-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 1988.

He came out of the University of Miami brash and proud. He was good, and he knew it. So did Florida State and Oklahoma. In Miami's 1987 national collegiate championship season under Jimmy Johnson, Irvin made the plays that brought home the trophy. He caught touchdown passes of 26 and 73 yards in the fourth quarter to beat No.

2 Florida State. In the Orange Bowl, Irvin caught the game-winning touchdown to beat Oklahoma. Tom liked what he saw and decided to draft Irvin in the first round despite his Miami moxie. Playing for Landry was not idea of a good time. I scored a touchdown he'd give me a nod was it," Irvin said.

"Now I score a touchdown and Jimmy gives there's a big and meelebratica Once I got into a scrape on the field. Coach Landry told me, "We're paying you a lot of money for your 99 Irvin has thrived under Johnson's hard-working but relaxed atmosphere. "I like to be brash and bold and it's not bragging if you back it up," Irvin said. "Jimmy lets us be ourselves if we win." Irvin's work habits and big play ability have won Johnson over. Even though Irvin was the Cowboys first pick, Johnson made the comment that Bennie Blades, who also was on the Miami team, was a better receiver.

Lacking speed, Irvin has survived by running perfect routes, taking hard hits and making the big play. "My work makes me confident," Irvin said. "I work, work, work, then I do it over again. I do it so much I don't have to think. It's automatic." Irvin constantly harps on quarterback Troy Aikman to get him the ball.

"I've heard him say, 'I can make the play' a million times in the huddle," Aikman said. "I know he can. But when he's being double-covered it can be difficult to get him the ball." Irvin has a street-tough attitude on the field. "I look at the guy lined up. across from me and I think my mother," Irvin said.

"I say, 'He is trying to stop from taking care of my It can't get any more personal than that." Leahy acknowledges some viewers may not catch the signal and will be lost in the shuffle; however, the move was made to give UH sports better statewide coverage.

"I think it's really beneficial to the people and university that now everything is live," Leahy said. "We don't have to preempt anything. If something is scheduled at midnight then we'll be there or at 5 p.m. then we'll be there. "In effect, we have given UH teams through Little Leagues and Broncos." Tam, at 5-8 and 185 pounds, and Ahu have different games.

But both are similar in other ways. Despite a difference in size, both run well and are mobile at their positions. "He's going to be a good one," Estrella said. "He will contribute this season. For a catcher, he runs well." Anyway, what's the family athletics its own broadcast channel called Home Team 5." During the UH football season, Jones Spacelink should continue to provide live coverage on cable, Leahy said.

Although there will be more coverage on UH athletics, including road games, Leahy doesn't foresee any UH events televised from the Big Island because of cost. "If it's just one game, I don't know because of the expense," he said. "Shipping over the trucks for one game is too expensive. Unless it's a series, then that's something we'd look at." lineage?
