RECORD-EAGLE, TRAVERSE CITY. MICH. 49684 THURSDAY, JULY 22, 1971 Page 19 NEW YORK (UPI)--Consider worker who is never sick, never late, completely obedient, nonunion, gets no vacation nor fringe benefits, can handle parts weighing 150 pounds hour after hour. And the cost is as low as $552 per month. A management dream? No, a reality--the industrial robot.

About 700 of them are at work around the world today, 500 in United States. But by the turn of the century it is estimated there will be one robot for every human production line worker in the United States. They have many applications. Point-to-point controlled robots are good at hot and cold forging, metal stamping, die QUEEN TOURS CHERRY PLANT National Cherry Queen Trudy Lindsay, who during the coming year will travel thousands of miles as an ambassador of the cherry industry, is learning all about the cherry business so she'll have the answers to newsmen's questions during press conferences and interviews around the nation. To gain first-hand knowledge of processing operations, Queen Trudy visited the Traverse City Canning Company plant in Traverse City Wednesday and was given a tour of the facilities.

Here she converses with Dave Kellogg, office manager, at the area where employes are making a final inspection of cherries after automatic pitters and sorters have processed the fruit. "I think I may have killed a girl," Brett T. Little announced when he walked into the Wayne County Sheriff's office Wednesday. Little then directed deputies to a bridge which runs over the Middle Rouge River. Underneath, floating face down in a section of shallow, muddy water, they found the nude body of Wendy Gates, who had just graduated from high school last month.

A medical examiner said it appeared she had been strangled. Little, a 20-year-old resident of this suburban Detroit community, was arraigned later in the day on a charge of first- degree murder. He stood mute and a plea of innocent was entered in his behalf. Westland District Judge Smith ordered Little sent to Ypsilanti State Hospital for psychiatric examination. No bond was set.

Little's mother, Mrs. Bill Little, said following a brief visit with her son in jail prior to his arraignment that he had told her "he wants to die because he can't believe he took somebody's life for no reason." 500 Are In The United States Seven Hundred Robots Work In World casting, machine ware transfer, flat injection moulding, tool loading and Versatran, Warren, Mich. Cost is another factor. The average price of Versatran, including tooling, is slightly under $20,000. The Unimate, sold by Unimation, Danbury, sells for around $28,000, including the $3,000 maintenance.

Unimation says its robot pays for itself 'in labor savings within 18 months on a two-shift welding operation. It also claims the Unimate has a 20 per cent higher production rate than the live worker. Unimation will lease or rent its robot on an hourly basis, $4 per houf on the first shift and the big robot users so a their assembly lines lend themselves to machines. General Motor's Lordstown assembly line is a prime example. American Motors, Volvo, Opel, BWW, Mercedez-Benz, Nissan Motors, Toyota and Fiat also use or are experimenting with robots.

Fuji Heavy Industries of Japan employs robots. At the Rex Forge division of Connrex a Verstran robot, used in a drop hammer forging operation involving auto parts, carries the hot bars once handled by three men. Plumbers Make More Than Top Professors LOS A (UPI) -Plumbers now can make more than top instructors under new wage scales adopted by the Los Angeles Community College District. The board a approved raises ranging from 4 per cent an hour for painters to 18 per cent hourly for electricians. Under the "prevailing community rates" for the district's 95 employes, tradesmen a guaranteed 12 months work annually at salaries up to $21,434.

The top teaching wage, spread over the 10-month school year, is $17,220. an hour thereafter. Versatran robot between $552 to rents $1,000 The for per month on a 90-day minimum contract. Why, then, since corporations costs and increase productivity, don't they "hire" more robots? The current business recession is one reason.

"If a company is operating at only 50 per cent capacity it has little incentive to put in automation, said J. Van Home, vice considered in any move toward robots. Union pressure has been given as another reason the robot industry hasn't grown as fast as one might think. Van always look for ways to cut Home of Versatran doesn't agree. "We've had good relations with the unions," he said.

"After all, the robot does the hot, dirty, heavy, drudgery jobs few workers want."
