State bank interest bill moves CUPD The state Senate Wednesday approved legislation allowing State banks to charge the same interest on loans as national banks. The bill's Senate Corporations a i a Donald Bishop, R-Rochester, said it would allow state banks to raise their interest-from 7 per cent to 9 per cent, what national banks arc now charfrins on personal loans.

The vote was 32-0. The same measure also would allow state banks to usinjc simple interest to compute tfie finance on loans instead of the current "add- on" method which consumers find confusing, Bishop said. --On a loan with an "add-on" interest arrangement, a consumer pays interest each time on the entire loan. But simple interest would allow him to pay interest each time on the remaining balance only. Bishop.

said allowing banks to use the simple interest arrangement could result in small savings to consumers. On a $2,000 loan with 6 per cent interest payable Over three years a consumer would pay $197 in finance charges under an add-on setup but only $192 under a simple interest one, if he decided to repay the loan after one year. 1x2 Sounds liko multiplication? again.
