B2 GETrVSBURG TIMES, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1995 FASTBREAKS nun Muff wul Hire report-, Phillips to return in a month? KANSAS CITY, Mo. Suspended Nebraska running back Lawrence Phillips could be reinstated within a month if he takes steps to control his anger, coach Tom Osborne said Monday. Phillips, a junior who rushed for 359 yards and seven touchdowns in the second-ranked Huskers' first two games, was suspended Sept. 10 after being charged with hitting his ex- girltnend. Osborne said Phillips, who has pleaded innocent to misdemeanor charges of assault, trespassing and destruction of property, is undergoing counseling.

I told Lawrence that he definitely needs to have some sort ol treatment where he can look at how to control his anger," Osborne said during the Big Eight coaches' teleconference. "I would not allow him to return unless medical people say some significant changes have taken place. There are several things he has to get ironed out." HOLTZ RETURNS TO NOTRE DAME PRACTICE SOUTH BEND, Ind. Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz was back at practice Monday, six days after having spinal surgery. A neck brace was the only visible sign of Holtz's health problems.

He pulled up to practice in his golf cart as usual, occasionally getting out when he saw a player doing something he didn't like. The junior varsity Knights were looking for their first win of the year, after an 0-2 start. Early in the third quarter, halfback Chris Kelso broke loose on an 18-yard run for the game's first score. On the ensuing kick-off, Saint Thomas returned the ball for a 55-yard touchdown. However, the Knights' Zachary Osborne made a goal-line tackle to stop the Saints extra point attempt. Deflated by yet another John Elway miracle, the Washington Redskins went from sad to worse Monday when they learned that left tackle Jim Lachey has a probable season- ending if not career-ending -injury Coach Norv Turner also made an appeal for the NFL to bring back the instant replay, citing a blown call that gave Denver a touchdown in the first half of the Broncos' 38-31 victory. An MRI test revealed that Lachey, a three-time Pro Bowl selection and anchor of the 1991 line that helped Washington win the Super Bowl, suffered a complete tear of the rotator cuff in his right shoulder on the Redskins first offensive series. His shoulders sagging, Lachey was resigned to sitting out the rest of the season after learning the news The Redskins him to see a couple of shoulder specialists who will likely recommend surgery but Lachey first wanted to go home Monday night and discuss his football future with his wife "I think you have to face that question when you've had a knee injury in your ninth year and a shoulder injury in your llth," Lachey said "You have to figure out if you're able to come back, and if you do come back, are you the same player as before? I don't want to cripple myself playing this game." In addition to reconstructive knee surgery in 1993, Lachey has three times torn his right rotator cuff, although the second time it was a partial tear that didn't require surgery.

The shoulder began bothering him again after the exhibition game at Miami last month, and he tried to ignore it. Eagles' Thomas in doghouse? PHILADELPHIA Ray Rhodes isn't happy with the play of some Philadelphia Eagles, and he isn't happy with the attitude of at least one. "We've got a lot of guys that are fighting," Rhodes said Monday as he dissected the Eagles' 27-21 loss to the San Diego Chargers. "Then you have a handful that's not doing what they're supposed to do." Although Rhodes wouldn't say who, he made it clear that, at one critical point in Sunday's game, one of those players who didn't follow orders was linebacker William Thomas. With the Eagles ahead 14-7 late in the first half, Chargers quarterback Stan Humphries fumbled the ball at the Philadelphia 15 and it bounced toward Thomas.

Trying to scoop the ball up, Thomas instead shoveled it toward Chargers center Courtney Hall, who quickly surrounded the gift On the next play, John Carney hit a 35-yard field goal to cut Philadelphia's lead to 14-10. From the earliest stages of their careers, football players are taught to fall on fumbles, but some try to pick them up and run. Rhodes made it clear he wants his players to think recovery first, return second. Description of Persons or Vehicles.
