2-Hawall Tribune Herald, Orchid Isle, December 31, 1995 January 6, 1996 New year brings changes to local stations Brokaw and Leno moving to KHNL; Joe Moore and 'Simpsons' on KHON By Frankie Stapleton Tribune-Herald TV editor Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? KHON Hawaii's longtime NBC station that switches to the Fox Network at midnight tonight wants to make sure that doesn't happen. It has been blitzing television viewers over the airwaves, in print advertising and even at the shopping malls with images of Joe Moore and reminders that KHON has been the home for more than a decade of the No. 1 television newscast in the state. KHON not only dominates the local TV news scene but NBC's primetime lineup features the hottest network programming for the second consecutive season boasting such ratings blockbusters as "ER," "Seinfeld," "Friends" and "Frasier" among others. That network affiliation all changes as the New Year rings in at the stroke of 12 tonight.

KHNL becomes the NBC station and KHON inherits such Fox Network programming as "The Files," "Baywatch "Melrose Place" and "Beverly Hills 90210." Doug Armstrong, president and CEO of KHNL, is positively gleeful at the prospect of getting 18 hours of NBC daytime. and primetime programming a day as compared to the five hours of the still-fledgling Fox programming provided daily, three hours of which are children's shows. "This is a huge increase for us in viewers, a huge increase in revenues," Armstrong said recently. Then he threw down the gauntlet. "And Joe Moore is not going to like the fact that their (KHON's) ratings are going to drop." Armstrong said he foresees a long-term "erosion" of the solid ratings KHON has established over the years as an NBC station once it becomes the Fox station.

"Over time it's going to have an impact," the KHNL general manager. said. "It hits first in prime time; it hits next in the 10 o'clock news. The pairing of Moore and Fox programming, according to Armstrong, will be "a demographic incompatibility." While Moore "is currently talking for" the 25-64 demographic group, Fox programming attracts "a whole different set of viewers" those in the 18-35 age group who tune in for "The Simpsons" and "Married With Children," he said. Armstrong said KHON retains the top-rated syndicated shows "Oprah," "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune" but will have to go shopping in the syndication marketplace for programs to fill the deficit in network programming created by the switch.

Jack Kellner, spokesman for KHON, bristled when told of Armstrong's comments. "I believe we'll get better numbers with Fox programming than KHNL did. "We have more to build on," Kellner said, adding the station does have some refining to do. "But we've already got a strong news organization in place whereas their's is in the formative stage." Kellner added, "We believe THE CHALLENGERS KHNL's evening news team of Heidi Umbhau, Robert Kekaula and Dan Cooke is looking to its new NBC connection to take viewers from Hawaii's leading newscaster, Joe Moore. Moore's home at KHON becomes Hawaii's Fox station with the New Year.
