Bidwill is trying to marshal support for a $200 million domed stadium, which would need some public funding.

"My gut feeling is that has: a lot to do with building the new stadium," Hill said. "I don't think he was getting much support for the spending because of the way people have been riding Buddy lately." Bidwill, who met briefly yesterday with Ryan, denied the proposed stadium had anything to do with the firing. "I like Buddy, and I think my relationship with Buddy has been friendly and above-board," Bidwill said. "And I truly regretted having to do Dissension between the offense and defense may have contributed to Ryan's problems. Ryan's reputation has always been as a coach who at the offense as a way to give the defense a breather.

Quarterback Dave Krieg faced the prospect of riding the bench if Ryan brought in Randall Cunningham next season. He didn't express any sorrow at the owner's action. "When you're 4-12, something has to be done," said Krieg, who took Detroit to the playoffs in 1994.

"When I came here, this was a much better team. How can you be 8-8 and turn around and go 4-12? The players have to take some responsibility as well, but it's very disappointing." Fans and players alike had high expectations for Ryan, who fueled them with his braggadocio when he arrived in 1994 after serving as defensive coordinator for the Houston Oilers. His attitude was a carryover from five years in Philadelphia, where he led the Eagles to a 43-35-1 record and three straight playoff berths. But they lost in the first round each time, and former owner Norman Braman fired him hours after a 20-6 loss to Washington on Jan. 5, 1991.

In Arizona, Ryan broke even his first year and followed that with his worst record ever. The Cardinals have not had a winning season since 1984 or been to the playoffs in a non-strike year since 1975. When Ryan replaced Joe Bugel, season-ticket salc3 doubled. Fans wanted to see what the mastermind of the tough Chicago Bears defense that helped win the 1986 Super Bowl could do for the Cardinals. This year, average attendance at games fell from 62,166 to 47,539.

Ryan brought in many of his former players who were familiar with his "46" defense. He was criticized for giving $14.5 million, five-year contracts to linebacker Seth Joyner and defensive end Clyde Simmons, two Philadelphia standouts who were less than impressive with the Cardinals. Tosanoumi umi earns promotion TOKYO (AP) Tosanoumi, who upset Takanohana and American Akebono during the last tournament, was promoted by one step to komusubi, or junior champion second class, in rankings for the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament released Monday. Tosanoumi, a 23-year-old old college graduate wrestler who ranked No. 1 maegashira (senior wrestler) in the last tournament in November, finished at 9-6.

Komusubi is the fourth highest rank in the traditional Japanese sport. dumped yokozuna (grand champion) Takanohana on the seventh day and twisted down yokozuna Akebono on the ninth day of the November tournament. Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, suffered a leg injury in the bout with Tosanoumi and withdrew from the tournament on the 10th day. Takanohana, who finished at 12-3 in the last tournament, remained at sumo's highest ranking of east yokozuna in the rankings announced by the Japan Sumo Association. Akebono, who finished 7-3 with five absences, was next at west yokozuna.

An assistant to Akebono, speaking by telephone from the wrestler's stable, said Akebono has recovered from his leg injuries and will compete in the New Year tournament, which starts Jan. 7 at Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena. He is seeking his ninth tournament victory. Ozeki (champion) Wakanohana, 12-3, who won the last tournament in a playoff with his younger brother Takanohana, was ranked in the third-best spot. The playoff was the first tournament bout between brothers in sumo history.

American ozeki Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, was in the fourth best spot. He finished at 10-5. Konishiki, or Salevaa Fuauli Atisanoe from Hawaii, was promoted by two steps to. No. 10 maegashira for his 8-7 record in the last tournament.

Bosnians have prospered in U.S. By Mario Fox AP Sports Writer CHICAGO They fled wartorn Bosnia-Herzegovina more than two years ago for the tranquility of the American heartland, trading their basketball skills for safe shelters and higher education. Now, as peace is returning to the European nation, 11 of the 19 immigrants from Bosnia's Cadet national basketball team are attending U.S. colleges. The rest are finishing high school.

All have prospered in the classrooms and on the basketball courts. As 20,000 U.S. peacekeeping troops prepare to spend the New Year in the Balkans, the Bosnian, youths spent their third Christmas 5,500 miles from their homeland. The senior guard for Mount St. Mary's has started what could be the trend of the late '90s as players get themselves emotionally ready for college basketball games: He contacts upcoming opponents by E-mail. "I started using E-mail every day and I was wondering if I could write to other players," McGuthrie said from his home, not far from the school's Emmittsburg, campus. "I looked a couple addresses up and it so.

I told him I could him a good deal and I don't want a big percentage." McGuthrie said Rutland answered him. "He said he and Tim had something for us and he didn't appreciate me talking trash on the computer. Then he said it was kind of funny," McGuthrie said. McGuthrie backed up his computer talk by scoring 36 points in a 75-62 loss to the 11th-ranked Demon Deacons. He said he was so upset with the loss that he didn't talk to Duncan and Rutland after the game.

He went on to lead an upset over another Atlantic Coast Conference team, scoring 37 points in the Mountaineers' 71-69 victory over No. 21 Georgia Tech, the first win over a ranked team for any school in the 14-year-old Northeast Conference. It was the first victory over an ACC school for Mount St. Mary's coach Jim Phelan, who is in his 42nd year at the school, compiling a 741-394 record. Phelan still wears a bow tie and looks more like he should be headed to the liberal arts building for a class than the gym for practice.

McGuthrie said the age difference isn't any kind of obstacle for the team even for a flamboyant player like himself. "I hit it off with him right away. He has a great sense of humor and he makes me and everyone else laugh," McGuthrie said, adding Phelan told him he has no problem with his E- mailing future opponents. "He doesn't mind anything as long as we get the job done. He always says we can play in skirts if we want to.

I didn't really expect him to be like that when I first met him." McGuthrie was a key part of Phelan's first NCAA Division: I tournament team last season and to this year's big win over Georgia Tech. "I really don't think about him and things like that during the game. He's the coach and I'm the player," McGuthrie said. "I'll always remember what his reaction was like last year when we made the tournament and: I watched the tape of the Georgia Tech game and looked for how he reacted and he was real excited and that's nice. That's nice thing to be a part of." Still, Chris McGuthrie is Chris McGuthrie and he wrapped up a brief interview with a question.

The 19 youths and their two coaches dodged sniper fire at the Sarajevo airport to leave the country and came to Illinois in two groups in August and September 1993. The teens ranging in height from 5-foot-10 to 7-foot were sponsored by local Rotary clubs and stayed with host families in northeastern Illinois, attending 12 high schools as foreign exchange students. "The whole thing has been a marvelous experiment," said Patsy Thalheimer, Saracevic's host mother from suburban Barrington, Ill.
