"If I think back in my earlier part of my life, I probably was not living a karmically good life. But then, who does when they're young and stupid?" The' idea of installing the plaque, which will include a raised pictorial sculpture and listing of his contributioiis, was initiated by the Wanderers Athletic Club, one of the sports organizations originally founded by Dr. Wong.

Glenn Hashimoto and Russ Goya have spearheaded the project and the Wanderers organization has donated over $2400 to create the plaque. Dr. Wong began his practice as a general practioner in Hilo in 1948; his sinpcal practice later followed in 1957. He was always a sports leader and even though he had a busy medical practice, Dr. Wong contributed his time and efforts to many community service endeavors.

Besides being the founder and chairman of the Wanderers Athletic Club, he also served as president of the Hilo High School Alumni Association, president of the Hawaii Island Golf Association, and commissioner of the Hawaiian Associatkn of Amateur AAletkUnkn. He was also the team physician forHBo High School and other schools, and the Big Island Amateur Boxing Association. Dr. Wong was named the Big Island's Sportsman of the Year in 1949 and again in 1965. Members of the Wong family, along with old-time friends and supporters are expected to be on hand to unveil the plaque.

George Yoshi-da, the Parks and Recreation director, will emcee the event Also participating in the ceremonies will be Council Chairman Jimmy Araka-ki and Councilman Aaron Chung. Dan Nathaniel Race results The Dan Nathaniel Long Distance Canoe Race held in Hilo Bay Saturday, Sept 12, is the final Big Island canoe race. The annual event was sponsored by the Kamehameha Canoe Qub of Hilo. Both the women's race and the men's race took somewhat of a triangle course, starting from the beach on bayfront, turning right at the breakwater, down to Richardson's Beach Park. Turning on an anchored official boat, the race continued in open ocean to Onomea Bay on the Hamakua coast Another turn on the official boat found crews racing back toward Hilo Bay, turning under the Wailuku Bridge and finishing in front of Kamehameha'shalau.

Winners of the 21-mile women's race with 10 peddlers per crew were: 1st Keaukaha, 3 hours 51 seconds; 2nd. Lae Ula Kai, 3rd. Waikoloa, 4th. Keauhou, 3:1445. Winners of the men's race were: 1st Kai Pua's ironman crew, 22358; 2nd.

Fallstrorn AP Sports Writer ST. LOUIS Win or lose, homer or no homer, Mark McGwire is having fun. No longer the master of the one-word answer, the exasperated glare or the superstar brush off, the SL Louis Cardinals slugger is a far different man from the one two years ago. Now, having overtaken Roger Maris and holding at 63 home runs, he is gracious to a fault willing to discuss his place in baseball history and winning fans wherever this home run carnival takes him. Nor does McGwire mind at all that Sammy Sosa has caught him twice.

"If he's ahead or I'm ahead I would not have one complaint, one iota," McGwire said. "It's an unbelievable year and that's the way I look at it." (Hearty, Sosa's carefree attitude during the chase has rubbed off on McGwire. He points out that he's had to deal with the commotion for a lot longer than the Cubs' star has. But row no question is too foolish. Not even the one about which film star should play him when no doubt there will be some version of "McGwire: The Movie." McGwire's response after suitable chin-scratching: Robert Redford (The Natural" McGwire, of course, is not always this accessible.

One day during his chase he stiffed the media. But he made up for soon after by talking for going to Southern California. "I'd probably be working at a car wash right now or something like that," he said. McGwire said he matured after missing much of the 1993 and '94 seasons because of heel problems. He has become the only player in major league history to hit SO homers three years in a row.

Forget those bulging biceps, McGwire said what's under his cap is the key to his success. "The mind is the strongest thing on anybody's body," he said. "It will overtake anything you want to overtake." The best way to do that, he believes, is by seeking solitude every day. "That's the only way you're ever going to get yourself centered," he said. "So many people get caught up in everything that's going on in their lives." In the aftermath of setting the record, McGwire said he didn't follow his own rules.

"The first couple days I was out there because of what's happening to me," he said. "You have to just take your time and relax and meditate, get centered. "Then everything will take its course and get back on line." MARK MCGWIRE more than 40 minutes. "I'm human," he said. "You guys don't wake up every day and put your 10 toes on the ground and be in a great mood every day.

So a couple days I might be crabby. "But I'll tell you what, from talking to other players and seeing the way Sosa has been going about it, I couldn't help but sit back and say I might as well enjoy this." Off the field he laughs, jokes and makes small talk with reporters. After breaking the record, McG-wire cracked that he'd been carrying the Gateway Arch on his back. At the Astrodome, he got a kick out of discovering that the Seal Beach hat he's taken to wearing to interviews can be had for $18 in the stadium gift shop. One of his recent news conferences wound down with thoughts on God, karma, meditation anything but baseball.
