GETTYSBURG TIMES, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16,1995 RELIGION B5 A different faith, the same community Church briefs BY PAUL HAALAND Times Staff Writer Allah-u-abhr! "God be all glorious." This is how Baha'is greet each other, to honor God. What is a Baha'i? Pam Frankenfield and her daughter Debby are Baha'is, believers in the 'oneness of God, the oneness of humanity and the oneness of Frankenfield, a soft-spoken woman who works for the Gettysburg National Military Park, has lived in Gettysburg for two years with her husband Howard (who is- not Baha'i) and her 14-year old daughter. Frankenfield conducts informational meetings at her home every Sunday for anyone interested. The Baha'i faith began almost 150 years ago in Persia (Iran) when Baha'u'llah The Glory of God'), declared himself the messenger of God's will. Baha'is now number more than six million, residing in over 200 countries and territories.

Baha'is believe that their faith is the latest revelation of God's plan for humanity. This is the Baha'i age, with The Bab (a precursor to Baha'u'Ilah) and Baha'u'llah the eighth and ninth messen- jrs of God after Abraham, rishna, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Christ and Muhammad "The difference between the Baha'i faith and other world religions is the idea of progressive explained Frankenfield. Gettysburg Bupp Para FrankenSeld and her daughter Debby, share the Baha'i faith in their home. There are more than six million Baha'is around the -world. "All life is progressive.

For example, when a baby is born, before it's born, it starts in the womb. It's reality is the womb-world, it's being prepared for the world outside. The outside world is going to be very different than where it started. The process of getting there was given to us by the Creator. Birth doesn't stop the process- the baby grows through progressive stages," said Frankenfield.

Yet Frankenfield stressed that another messenger will eventually come and reveal God's will once again. They come about each 1000 years. I don't have any idea about who it will be- male or female. It will come when humankind needs the next progressive revelation from God," said Frankenfield. Baha'is respect the teachings of other world religions, since they believe in the unity of God.

a Baha'i gathering, would have teachings of The Bab, Baha'u'llah and Abdu'l Baha, the son of Baha'u'llah. But we might also read from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, the Koran (holy book of Muslims) and other revealed religions," Frankenfield said. Baha'is celebrate the diversity of culture in the world, believing in the equality of humanity instead of its division into races and countries. To be a Baha'i doesn't mean you have to give up your culture. You bring your culture with you, and join your culture with the cultures of other Baha'is." said Frankenfield.

Baha'is pray every day, choosing from among short, medium and long prayers. For example, since prayers need to be done out loud (but quietly), a Baha'i may offer a short prayer when sharing a hotel room with another person who is not Baha'i. Baha'is worship together once every 19 days, at the beginning of a new Baha'i month. The Baha'i prayer calendar consists of 19 months. The Baha'i faith has no priests or ministers, only local and national assemblies of adult Baha'is, led by an international governing council based in Haifa, Israel.
