MICH. 49684 TUESDAY, MAY 11,1971 Pog. 25 Danish Chess Whiz Prepares For World Championship By Snoozing COPENHAGEN (UPI)--Denmark's chess grandmaster, Larsen, is in snoozing good shape for the start on May 13 of the 1971 world chess quarterfinals that eventually will produce a challenger for Russia's world champion, Boris Spassky. Larsen concedes that he trains for these matches by getting a lot of sleep, seldom arising before noon.

He calls himself Denmark's champion stay-abed. It apparently is a successful system. He has twice gotten to within playing distance of the title, losing in 1965 to former champion Mikhail Tal, and then being crushed by Spassky in 1968 in the Russian's surge to the title. In the quarterfinal round, Larsen faces East Germany's Wolfgang Uhlmann in Las Palmas, Spain. Former world champion Tigran Petrojan will face West Germany's talented Hans Huebner in Milan, Italy.

Crowd-pleaser Bobby Fischer of the United States will take on Mark Taimanov of the Soviet Union in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Victor Korchnoi I and Efraim Geller, both Rus- sians, will play at Sotji, Georgia, in the Soviet Union. Most experts pick Larsen, Petrojan, Fischer and Korchnoi to advance to the semifinals later this summer. Connoiseurs over the world are already anticipating a Larsen-Fischer semifinal clash. The 28-year-old Brooklyn-based Fischer, for years one of the bad boys in world chess, won the 1970 Interzonal tournament in great style. He lost only one game in Spain, to Larsen, 36, who took second place after a slow start.

Many experts thought it unfair to the two "Western" players that they should meet in a semifinal, but it did not bother Larsen. "There is not much difference in quality at the top, and I believe I have one or two tricks up the sleeve for Bobby, should we both get that far again. Bobby has never played this sort of game before with all the tension and special atmosphere." Chess has been Larsen's life since he stopped studying engineering and Russian at Copenhagen University in the early 1960s. He broke into the world limelight at the Chess Olympics in 1956 with a draw against then world champion Mikhail Botvinnik. It earned him the grand master title, the highest honor inside the chess world, other than "world champion."
