northwest: high Thurs day east and north to southwest New Attempt To Abolish Poll Tax Opens in Capitol WASHINGTON Iffl A Southern sponsored drive to outlaw the poll tax as a requirement for voting in federal elections gets under way today before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee Sponsors of the proposed con stitutional amendment include signers of the recent calling for Southern resistance by all lawful means' against the US Supreme Court decree outlawing segregation of" Negro pupils in public schools Sen Holland (D la) a leader of the sponsors called the con stitutional procedure sure way and Horses Lost TULSA Okla A dozen rid ing horses burned to death in a midnight fire that destroyed The Barn in the northeast part of the city ire Capt Robert Phillipe said the horses were valued be tween (R Mass) today conceded House Republicans an uphill to save the Eisenhower adminis farm program Martin GOP House leader con ferred with Republican strategists in an inconclusive last minute huddle before the House squared off over a compromise farm bill pronounced unacceptable by Sec retary of Agriculture Benson still fishing for a few Martin said He told reporters GOP floor leaders would continue seeking ways of softening up 'controversial features of the farm bill 'right up to voting time later in the day The measure provides for a re turn to rigid high level farm price supports and WASHINGTON ffl Sifting through a web of alleged bond deals investigating senators called more witnesses today in a hunt for evidence of possible graft in the buying of army uniforms The Senate Investigations sub committee summoned former asso ciates of Joseph (Joey) Abrams a New York garment maker for questioning about $138000 of bonds it contends Abrams bought in their names and millions of dollars worth of other bonds al legedly bought under phony names The subcommittee identified the witnesses as Jack Schwartz a one time business partner of Abrams in New York and Atillio Musto another former associate The subcommittee has placed in evidence records it says show Abrams bought $20000 worth of bonds in the name of Schwartz and $118000 in name Chairman McClellan (D Ark) said yesterday the subcommittee intends to show whether bonds were used as payoffs to Army Quartermaster Corps officials or in some income tax evasion scheme Abrams could not be reached for comment Nathan Rosen a Brooklyn NY wholesale meat dealer testified that was used for a in some of the bond deals He said Abrams set him up in a garment business in 1951 and put up all the money for the oper ation toll was pushed to 148 with the deaths yesterday of three men injured in state accidents At this time last year the toll was 144 The latest fatalities: Alton Andrew Wilson 52' Sayre Jesse James 45 Wilburton Tony Paltonivich 65 Red Oak Wilson was fatally injured when his car sideswiped a bridge and overturned on State Highway 73 northwest of Sayre He died five hours after the accident in a Sayre hospital James and Paltonivich were killed when the pickup truck in which they were riding overturned into a water filled ditch east of Wilburton on a county road Patrol troopers said the driver Brown 60 Wilburton was critically injured Edward (Eddie) Greenwell 15 of 200 Circle Drive died shortly before 1 pm today of injuries suf fered this morning when the motor scooter he was riding was in volved in a crash with two cars at the intersection of Third avenue and street northwest Greenwell son of Mr and Mrs Dewey Greenwell died in Miami Baptist hospital without regaining consciousness after suffering a compound skull fracture a com pound leg fracture and a broken arm The death was traffic fatality within city limits since Sept according to Police Chief A Masterson Police said a 1955 investigated the accident reported the boy was thrown some 50 feet from the point of impact into a tree The scooter struck the Mercury near the right rear door and was thrown into a yard at the north east corner of street The youth officers said parently struck the base of ticc head on and landed on sidewalk Mahanes was not held Mas terson said he planed to talk with Assistant County Attorney Bob
