The Mayor had received information that the funds were exhausted and he offered the use of the police if no other meann could he found to keep the grounds open. President Somcrs said the Board was proud to notify the that there wore ample funds and that it was skilled direction and not keeping order that was needed. President Somers will go to Washington on Monday to confer with the War Industries Board to urge the necessity of releasing building material for new school buildings. A report will be made on his return. The only discussion was upon the matter of allowing a week's vacation with pay to the teachers in charge ol! the war gardens.

Mr. Kilpatrick, inspector of school gardens, made a strong plea for the teachers, but tb nonrd took the ground that the service was voluntary on tho part of the teach-cis, nnd was given In vacation time for which they were already being pain, in addition to which they received tin salary for tho war garden work. Mary Selonica, Bll West 143d street, Manhattan, was appointed confidentln' secretary to tho Board, at $1,600 sain I APARTMENTS SCARCE IN ALL SECTIONS Stoppage of Building Creates Famine in Multi-Family Structures. Real estate brokers are besieged these days by apartment seekers who are anxious to locate in the new subway transit zones of the borough. Klntlmsh is a favorite Held.

The realty men of that section Bay thnt there Is a veritable famine in apartment house space, notwithstanding the fact that an increase in rentals in most of the apartment has been made. There will be no new apartment buildings to offer tliis fall and indications nre that the situation In the building market is not likely to Improve within the next year, or until the Government decides to realease building material for this sort of operation. Because of tho recent extensive auction sale of choice suburban homes and homo sites at Brighlwuters, the Idea has been freely expressed In certain Investment and financial circles that suburban real estate development has been overdone and that such property Is a drug on the market. On the other hand, It Is asserted that such a situation is far from being the fact. Many suburban homo owners and developers' within tho thirty-mile limit from Manhattan on Long Island point out that the demand for buburbun homes and plots for improvement with them Is good, but that It would be much better If war conditions were not a disturbing factor.
