There was a time when water transportation was necessary in getting from point to point in the Grand Traverse Region.

One of the important waterways was the Chain O' Lakes from Elk. Rapids north. Such names as Queen of the Lakes, Odd Fellow, and this, the Mable, were familiar to pioneer residents. This picture of the Mable, a combination cargo and passenger craft on the Chain, was taken as it approached Alden through the river. Down through the years there have been many changes in the Grand Traverse Region but almost since the founding of Traverse City our service to the community has been an important factor in the growth and development of the area.
