Schenck House Continued from Page 3 it was in a sadly deteriorated state and was used as a concession stand in a city park. When efforts to preserve the building failed, the house was given to the Museum. Although the Schenck House was built around the time of the revolution, it was heavily remodeled in the early decades of the 19th century. Consequently, the new installation presents the rooms as they might have appeared around 1830, after several generations of use by the same family. Since The Brooklyn Museum also has on exhibition the house that Nicholas' grandfather, Jan Martense Schenck, built around 1675, the public can see the continuing traditions and changing fashions in the way one Dutch-American family lived in Brooklyn over a period of more than 150 years.

The Schenck rooms have been furnished with a mixture of things that in 1830 would have been both old and new. This combination of objects reflects the accumulation of goods that occurred in most houses of the period. Seldom was a house completely furnished with new things, but rather family heirlooms took their place alongside modern conveniences. The opening of the rooms marks the completion of a project begun in 1976 to reinstall all 21 of the period rooms originally opened to the public in 1929. The renovation is documented in a book discussing the Jan Martense Schenck and Nicholas Schenck Houses scheduled for publication in 1985.

To celebrate the reopening of the rooms, the Museum will present a symposium with a performance of period movement and deportment contrasting life in the 18th and early 19th centuries. A new gallery for the display of early 19th-century decorative arts is also now open. Vote Continued from Page 3 is basically a paper ballot that you fill out. After the election, the Board of Elections will check to see if you are entitled to vote. If you are, your vote can be counted.

If you change your mind, you can move the lever back and select a different one. In the general election, don't forget to look at the right side of the ballot to see if there are any ballot proposals to vote on. Once your choices are made, leave the levers down, and then pull the large handle to open the curtains and register your vote. If you cannot vote without assistance because you are disabled or cannot read the ballot, federal law allows you to have anyone you choose assist you in the voting -other than your employer or his agent, or an agent of your union.
