FRIDAY NIGHT, a reception was scheduled at the Little Gallery in Holualoa from 7 to 9 p.m. to celebrate the opening of a new exhibit of water color paintings by local artist Kay Nakatani.

Nakatani has a reputation as an excellent gardener with a flair for cross pollination which produces many beautiful and often unusual plants and flowers, many of which become the subjects of her paintings. The Little Gallery is open Tues day through Saturday from 10 to 4. AT ITS REGULAR meeting yesterday, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Hawaiian Bank Conference Room in Kailua, the West Hawaii Writers group was to hold elections for new officers for 1987. They are planning a used book sale for a date in May yet to be announced.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to sponsor an essay contest for local school children. If this works out as planned the essay contest may become an annual event. Publication of the West Hawaii Writers' second book on local color, "Talk Story," is planned for early summer. YOU THROUGH THE training. As soon as the opening date for the league is set it will be noted in this column. SOTERO BAILADO, secretary of the South Kona Aloha Lions, has announced the date of the annual auction of the group. These auctions have been going on for several years to raise funds for a variety of community projects which the group underwrites.

Some of the projects of the past year have been a diabetes and blood pressure clinic in Captain Cook and in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, an annual Christmas party for the elderly in Kea-lakekua, a cleanup of Hookena Beach, a scholarship for a Konawaena student, trophies for the Senior Citizen Big Island Gomoku Tournament and many others. dance in the forming of bowling leagues, helping them to write league rules and to set up their organizations. The associations have a further responsibility in arranging tournaments at the local level. The groups will meet very soon to elect their officers and set up committees. It is possible that the almost instant popularity of the new lanes has surprised even the promoters.

No leagues have been started yet, but reports have come to me that it is difficult to find an open alley at almost any time of day. Last Tuesday morning Sidney Kanno, director of Elderly Activities for the County Department of Parks and Recreation, set up bowling clas- ses for senior citizens. The classes are planned to run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for seven weeks. During that time a senior citizen bowling league will be organized. Participants will include some from the classes and others who feel that they can start in the league without any additional Items to be auctioned are donated by local businesses, hotels, restaurants, farmers, retirees, and friends of the club.

The auction this year will be on Saturday, Arpil 25, in the Kamakahonou Ballroom at the King Kamehameha Hotel. It will start at 6:30 p.m. Some items will be given away as door prizes for those in attendance. AS ASSOCIATE GROUP of the Lions Club, the South Kona Aloha Lionesses has a community project of its own which has provided a welcome security to recipients of its benefits. They have for a couple of years been underwriting the annual cost for a number of installations of the -Kona Hospital LIFELINE alerting system.

We have learned recently that members of the Kona Hospital Auxiliary have increased by one the number of LIFELINE units for which they underwrite the cost.
