24- -Hawaii Tribune-Herald, Orchid Isle, March 28-April 3, 1982 Women Preserve, Enhance Hawaii's Natural Beauty HONOLULU In over 3,000. eventually association with Women's History Week, March 14-20, the late Cherilla L. Lowrey of Honolulu was remembered for her far reaching contributions. Much of Hawaii's natural beauty, including thousands of stately old trees everywhere and community parks is directly attributable to the initial dedicated efforts of a handful of women led by Lowrey. In March of 1912, Lowrey and six other women formed Oahu's The Outdoor Circle (TOC).

TOC was dedicated to preserving and enhancing the beauty of Hawaii. Under the able direction of its first president, membership grew from six to 500. TOC planted mahogany, coconut, and oleander trees along Kalakaua Avenue, Royal Poincianas on Wilder Avenue, and many other trees along Lusitania Street, on Round Top, and Tantalus in Honolulu. These women scattered Kukui nuts from horseback, watering their plantings from water barrels transported by horse and buggy.

TOC started a nursery at Kapiolani Park which was turned over to the city, opened the first children's playground, and provided the city with its first Christmas tree. A notable effort included the adoption of the hibiscus as the city flower in 1915, the Territorial flower in 1923, and the state flower in 1959, TOC has planted thousands of hibiscus throughout the state including those on the Capitol grounds. Perhaps TOC's most outstanding achievement was its 14-year battle to rid Hawaii of unsightly and ugly billboards. The battle was initiated during Lowrey's term as president. Dr.

MASTERCARD ACCEPTED It is difficult to imagine Hawaii with huge disfiguring billboards urging its citizens to smoke Bull Durham, buy Palm Beach suits, or to clean with Old Dutch Cleanser.

Or to think of a Diamond Head or Punchbowl Crater desecrated with advertisements featuring letters 10 feet high. That is the way it was prior to 1927. In 1913, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser, owned and published by Lorrin A. Thurston assisted TOC in its anti-billboard campaign by publishing an entire issue dedicated to the cause. It was not until 1927, however, after Lowrey's death, that TOC won the war.

Today, a state free of billboards impresses world-wide visitors as well as residents returning from travels. Cherilla Storrs was the wife of Lewers and Cooke president, Francis Jewitt Lowrey and mother of four. children. The Lowreys maintained a lovely Honolulu home. "Niniko" translated as "Place of Rest" which featured indoor and outdoor garden profusions.

Hawaii can be proud of Lowrey's early pioneer efforts and achievements in the areas of beautification and to this woman's commitment to Hawaii's natural beauty. Cherilla Lowrey of Honolulu was the early guiding force in establishing Oahu's first Outdoor Circle which concentrated on beautification..
