THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 1964 THE CANARSIE COURIER, BROOKLYN, N.Y. PAGE SEVEN Little Old Canarsie A history of Canarsie and the derivation of its place names. By Pearl Minsky Kaufman Place The street was also known as "Grand Place." It is located from Canarsie Road to East 94th Street. between Avenues and N. On a map dated May 25, 1904 the Grand Realty Company owned this land and the street running through it, "Grand Place." The name was never officially changed from its former name, "Kaufmann." It was suggested by a member of the Street Planning Commission that the reason why the name was never officially changed to "Grand" was that there were two streets already called "Grand" in Brooklyn at that time.

Formerly, this land was owned by Ernst Rost. The name "Kaufmann" was apparently given to this street by Rost. Both of these names appear to be German in origin. Kopt Lane This street is now known as "School Lane." In 1863 land in the area was owned by a P. H.

Kopk. A Peter Kopf, a farmer, is listed in the 1870 Census. It is quite likely that all three of these names were the same despite the spelling differences. Krier Place In 1854 land was owned by a Wendelin Krier in this area. In 1865 a Wynterlyn Krier is listed in the Census.

In 1870 the name 15 spelied Wyndeslin and finally in 1875 it is Wendal Krier, a farmer, from Germany, who is listed. It is apparent that Mr. Krier or the census recorder had some difficulty with the spelling of the name. It was finally Americanizea as is often true with names. Lane to Tyler Davis Formerly known as "Van Houten's Lane" and as "Davis' Lane," this street extended from Remsen Avenue to East 92nd Street, between Flatlands Avenue and Avenue J.

The first notation of a Van Houten as a landowner in this area is dated February 10, 1803. Other purchases in the area were made by the Van Houtens in 1810, 1834, 1836, 1857, 1871 and 1888. In 1845, a Van Houten sold to a Davis on both sides of the lane. Other Davis owned land is noted in the area as well. Van Houten sold land to a Morrison and he sold it to an S.

W. Tyler, who owned the land from 1867-1886. In 1871 Van Houten also sold land to Tyler. In 1865, the Census shows individuals with all of these last names lived in the area. The Davis family lived in Flatlands as early as 1654.

It would appear that when the Van Houtens sold their land, the lane took the name of both families who purchased it. (to be continued) 24-Hr. Towing Service Open 24-Hrs. Daily. PLAID STAMPS given at -CROWNMGM SERVICE STATION, INC.
