The National Park Police; with responsibility for security in the center, says it will augment its force in the grand foyer and in other public areas of the building. When Chairman Roger L. Stevens of the center's board of trustees announced the closing last December, he ascribed the decision primarily to inaction by Congress on his request for funds to support memorial aspects of the building. Stevens argued that it was unfair to ask the center's box-office patrons to support the John F.

Kennedy memorial aspects, when such monuments as the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial are maintained by tax funds. Congress has not yet voted the $1.5 million he asked for this purpose, but approval, within the next few months seems assured. The Nixon administration is backing the center's request.
