The German hosts are slowly losing, retreating inch by inch; positions of their carefful choosing and which they thought a cinch have from their warriors been wrested by Allied sword and gun; by Haig Pop Hindenburg's been bested, he'll soon be on the run. Yet Kaiser Bill is busy spinning, whene'er he has the chance, tall yarns of how his men are winning among the hills of France. The more the Kaiser's men are beaten, the more he waves his hat. "Just watch- our masterly retreatin'," he yells; "get wise to that! Such strategy's beyond all praising, the foe it must confound; by strokes of genius amazing we've lost ten miles of ground!" How long will patient Germans swallow the Kaiser's fairy tale, while they strive on, with stomachs hollow, to raise for Bill more kale? Upon his word they have been leaning and never found it right. He told them that his REMINISCENCES OF HILO LANDSCAPE That large banyan tree, standing in the upper portion of the court house premises, with its immense root branches supporting the extraordinary reach of its biggest branches, has aroused questioning and interest in regard to its origin, not only among visitors but age, also among residents of Hilo.

That tree is now thirty-five years old. It was planted there by Mr. L. Severance in 1882, when he was sheriff of the County of Hawaii. He planted all the trees, with the exception of two or three, that are now standing in the court park.

There used to be another banyan tree in the yard, a little to the east of the tree that is there now, which was even taller, but taken as a whole about the same size. When it was decided to widen Waianuenue street, this large tree was in the way, 80 it was thought best to remove the obstruction. However, Mr. George Williams, who was the sheriff at that time, was imbued with the same spirit that is shown in the wellknown poem "Woodman, spare that tree." He purchased the tree and then removed it bodily to his place at Kaumana, a distance of five miles. The transplanting was successful.

It sent out fresh roots in the new soil and flourished, but not as well as before. 'Its old companion and rival in the court house park is now larger and more healthy in appearance. Whether homesickness or soil is the reason, psychologists and agricultural experts only may answer. submarining would shortly end the fight. He told them Hindenburg would quickly back Britain off the scene; he told them fibs so thin and sickly they'd fool a horse marine.
