(UPI) A judge says an electronic monitor suggested by a Spiderman cartoon strip kept him confined to his home last weekend and should do the same for criminals on probation. District Judge Jack Love wore the experimental device on his right leg all weekend even into the shower.

He said Monday he could not leave his house to do gardening or work in the garage without the device telling on him. "It put me on a very, very short leash," the 56-year-old judge said. Love strapped the device on Thursday and said he got the idea from a Spiderman cartoon strip. In the strip, a villain strapped such a device to Spiderman so he could monitor the hero's movements. The judge and designers of the device about the size of a package of cigarettes hope it can be used to monitor the movements of people placed on probation.

It emits a signal to a receiver connected to the telephone in the house, and the signal is then transmitted to a computer which keeps track of the movements. If the wearer tries to take the device off or adjust it, it information to the computer. Love says the monitor would be ideal for people convicted of drunken driving, who are required to stay out of their cars or bars at night.
