Last week the Spartans were named the nation's No.

1 team before dismantling powerful Notre Dame, 17-7, Saturday in the game of the week. No sooner hadi Coach Duffy Daugherty uttered such praises of "I think we arrived today" and "This is the true test of a great team," than a murmur of dissent arose within the Big Ten conference. Wisconsin Coach Milt Bruhn called Iowa's Hawkeyes a better team than Michigan State. "I'd have to call Iowa better," said Bruhn, "because its attack is diversified while Michigan State mostly ran over us." Michigan Stale and Iowa, ranked fourth, are the Big Ten's only undefeated, untied teams nationally. Both Ohio State and Minnesota retained perfect records in conference play.

Iowa mangled Wisconsin, 47-15; Ohio State- blanked Northwestern, 10-0; and Minnesota breezed past Illinois, 3S-0. MSU. Iowa, Ohio State and Minnesota are currently tied for the conference lead with 2-0 marks. Michigan I) edged Purdue, 16-14, and Indiana (0-2) defeated Washington State, 33-7. Michigan State and Ohio State have yet to be scored on In Big Ten competition and Minnesota, defending co-charnpion with Iowa, has been reached for only three points in its two games.

Iowa has yielded 23 points in two games but the Hawkeye attack has scored an average of 37 points in each game. Matt Szykowny, taking over for the injured Wilburn Hollis. really had the Hawkeye a ta rolling against Wisconsin. Szykowny threw 17 passes and completed 14 for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Tossing- this Jn with Iowa's always powerful ground attack, it's small wonder, that Bruhn called the Hawkeyes better than Michigan State.

The Spartans have a sufficient passing attack but their power is on the ground. Their big man, George Saimes, took off for touchdown runs of 24 and 25 yards in leading the triumph over Notre Dame. Which is the better team, Michigan State or Iowa? That's a question which must go unanswered because these two powers do not meet this year. As matters now stand, MSU is solid favorite to win the Big Ten. The Spartans have five conference games beginning with Indiana at East Lansing Saturday: Then they play at Minnesota and at Purdue, in their toughest conference tests before returning home to face Northwestern and Illinois, both beading for second division finishes.

Iowa has a tougher schedule in playing Purdue, Ohio State, Minne- and Michigan in succession while Ohio State plays Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana and Michigan. Minnesota meets Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Purdue and Wisconsin and figures to stumble somewhere along the way. Another MSU advantage is that the Spartans play seven gamss and if they remain undefeated they will finish ahead of Iowa and Ohio State who play six conference games. Saturday's schedule finds Iowa Purdue, Indiana at Michigan State, Michigan at Minnesota, Ohio State at Wisconsin, Northwestern at Notre Dame and Illinois at Southern California. Clicking with an effective aerial combination with castoff quarterback Billy Wade pitching lo ookie end Mike Ditka, the Bears moved smoothly against the usually stubborn 49ers defense and shackled San Franciscs's hree-barreled shotgun with a 5-2-4 lefensive deployment. By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The National Hockey League is Beginning to take on a more fa-" niliar look, with Montreal back its accustomed spot atop the standings. The powerful Canadiens only lave a share of the spot--surprising New York owns the other half of the No. 1 position--but the Can- adiens have played three, fewer lames than the Rangers.

A pair of victories over the weekend, a 6-2 romp over unhappy Boston Saturday and Sunday's 3-2 comeback over i a boosted Montreal into a tie with New York, each with 9 points. And while the onrushing Cana- diens were keeping their unbeaten record intact, New York was able to pick only one point in two games and lost the services of its regular goalie, Gump Worsley. The stubby netminder was hospitalized in Detroit with a severe concussion midway through the Rangers' 4-4 tie with the Red Saturday. He was knocked off his feet and struck his head on the ice. The Rangers hastily summoned Marcel Faille from Springfield of the American Hockey League and he will remain in the New York nets until Worsley can return.

Faille was victimized by lack of support and beaten by Detroit 5-4 in New York Sunday night.
