Whatever his style, there Is no disputing that Earl Clark is the finest all-around back ever to wear the Detroit Lions' Dutch Clark was an all-league selection six Urnes and his all- around ability was so pronounced that enemy coaches said having Clark on the field was like having a couch in the lineup. Clark played with the old Portsmouth team before the club moved to Detroit. There were faster runners in the league, but none more successful. Clark had a mystifying change of pace that made up for the step he kicked in speed. Pop Warner thought Clark was one of the game's truly great blockers.

Clark was a drop kicker, a punter with great accuracy, a good passer and receiver. As a quarterback, Clark was keen at diagnosing enemy weaknesses, then directing his own team's attack to take advantage of the opposition's flaws. Clark was player-coach for the Lions in 1937, and coached them in 1938. News of the fight leaked out despite apparent efforts of the Dodger front office to conceal the incident, which occurred June 15 before the first game against the Cubs in Los Angeles.

The story was broker) here by Bob Hunter, Examiner baseball writer. A member of the Cubs, not worn to secrecy, let Hunter in on the closely guarded secret. Hunter told this story: It started while Larker, hitting fungoes during infield practice, drove several balls very close to Wills. Wills, resenting the proximity of the drives to him, concluded that Larker was trying to hit him and finally fired a ball at the first baseman, hitting him in the leg. As they went to the clubhouse for the pregame meeting the fight broke out.

Gil Hodges stepped in to break it up and was struck on the nose. Frank Howard, rushing in to stop the battle, slipped and fell on his back.
