Blue ribbon winner Si Barry Sanders begins practice PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) The Detroit Lions' ultimate offensive weapon returned to the playing field Tuesday. All-Pro running back Barry Sanders, absent from training camp since it began July 10, participated in afternoon practice at the team's outdoor facility at the Silverdome. "It was just like riding a bicycle," Sanders said following the workout.

"Once you do it you never forget how." The return of last season's NFL rushing champion enabled the Lions to showcase their "real" offense for the first time since camp began. Opposing teams set their defenses against the pass in Detroit's first three exhibition games. Sanders' presence will not only change the look of the Lions' offense, but the strategy of opposing defenses. "Teams will have to put one player on Barry when he's out there," Fontes said. "I don't think the linebackers will drop back as deep as they're doing right now, and that will open up the passing game." Sanders will immediately learn two or three new running plays, including a toss sweep.

He also will become more involved in the passing game, according to Fontes. "Barry has to learn to run without the ball," he said. "Look for him to possibly run some corner routes and maybe line up as a slot receiver. We have to get him away from blocking and out of the back-field more." Fontes is still uncertain of Sanders' playing status for this Saturday's preseason game at Kansas City. Sanders said he would like to play a few series.

"The plays are pretty much the same from the two passing camps earlier in the year, but I need the extra work right now," Sanders said. "I guess it will be good to block less. Blocking was never one of my stronger points." Sanders ended his 33-day holdout Monday, signing a one-year contract extension. PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) The Detroit Lions on Tuesday waived linebacker Rob Hinckley and cor-nerback Riley Ware. Hinckley, the Lions' fourth-round draft choice out of Stanford last year, was sidelined all last season with a foot injury. He sustained another foot injury in training camp this season and played very little in the team's first three exhibition games. Ware was signed as a rookie free agent this year out of Western Kentucky.

Sports Peddler rallies back season in the third year of a five-year, $5.9 million contract. The Lions guaranteed Sanders S3.2 million to end his holdout a $2.1 million signing bonus and an additional $1.1 million if the Lions choose to exercise the option for 1994. He will reportedly make approximately $7 million overfour years. Sanders also said Monday he would pay an unspecified bonus out of his own contract to each of his offensive lineman. "That's really the type of guy Barry is," starting left guard Eric Andolsck said.

"He takes care of us and we take care of him." The amount will be based on Sanders' production and was not added to his new deal. Sanders won last year's NFL rushing title gaining 1 ,304 yards on 255 carries. Linebacker Mike Cofer and linenman Harvey Salem remain holdouts.
