16-PETOSKEY NEWS- REVIEW Wednesday, August 28, 1974 news Sports By STU CAMEN UPI Sports Writer Both Dock Ellis and Jack Billingham have simple explanations for their pitching Beyer Sees Improved Year at East Jordan By DAVE PITT EAST JORDAN-Enthusiasm is the magic word this year down in the East Jordan football camp. Head coach James Beyer is entering this third year at the East Jordan helm with what he said is his most enthusiastic and hardest working team. "This year's team has a very intensive inner attitude," Beyer said. "It's a very exciting group to be a part of." There are 17 juniors and nine seniors out for this year's East Jordan High School football team that will be attempting to rebound from last fall's 2-6-1 record. There are 15 lettermen back as the nucleus of the team.

Returning senior lettermen are: Brian Bolser, Dave Piechocki, Fred Brooks, Chuck Gothro, Stokes Burrows, Rusty Hoffman, Ed Koehs, Denny Pirates Stretch Lead; Reds, LA Win "If I keep the ball in the park, I'll win," said Ellis Tuesday night after the Pittsburgh Pirates routed the San Francisco Giants 13-2 for Ellis' eighth straight triumph and his 11th win in 19 decisions. The big difference between the way Ellis is pitching now and the way he pitched when he lost eight of 11 games is that he gave up 10 homers in his first 11 decisions but has permitted only one home run during his eight game winning streak. "Things always even out in baseball," added Ellis. "I wasn't worried when I was losing early in the season. I wasn't concerned about the team losing either, because everything evens out." Billingham became the National League's first 16-game winner when he hurled the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-0 triumph over Philadelphia, blanking the Phils on seven hits.

Ellis, who scattered 10 hits and helped his own cause with two RBIs, got all the support he needed from Al Oliver who Irove in five runs, four of them with a double and single, to highlight a nine-run third inning. The hits also extended Oliver's batting streak to 20 games and he has now hit safely in 56 of his last 60 EAST JORDAN--Head football coach Jim Beyer game against Hillman. The victory, combined with St. Louis' loss to San Diego, increased the Pirates' lead to 1 games over the second place Cardinals in the National League East.

Tony Perez doubled in two runs for Cincinnati and Dave Concepcion singled home another as the Reds remained three games behind pace-setting Los Angeles in the West. Dick Ruthven, 6-11, took the loss and it was the sixth time this year the Phils have been shut out with Ruthven pitching. In other National League games, Los Angeles routed Chicago 12-5, San Diego tripped St. Louis 3-1, New York beat Houston 4-2 and Montreal defeated Atlanta 6-1. Dodgers 12, Cubs 5 Jimmy Wynn drove in two runs with his 29th homer and solo shots by Bill Buckner and Joe Ferguson powered Los Angeles over Chicago.

The Cubs used two-run homers by Jose Cardenal and Jerry Morales to take a 5-4 lead after 2 innings but the Dodgers went ahead for good in the bottom of the third when Willie Crawford singled home one run and Bill Russell singled in two more. Charlie Hough worked the last 6 2-3 innings, allowing just one hit, to earn his seventh victory in 10 decisions. Padres 3, Cardinals 1 Willie McCovey and Dave Winfield tagged Bob Gibson for solo homers to help San Diego defeat St. Louis. Dan Spillner, a 22-year old -hander, who had dropped his last five decisions, outdueled Gibson as he shackled the Cards on eight hits.

Lou Brock stole his 89th base to move 24 games ahead of Maury Wills' record breaking pace of 1962 when he stole 104. Benny Ayala homered in his first major league at-bat to touch off a three-run second inning and Tug McGraw, making his first start in over a year, allowed only one run in six innings to lead New York over Houston. He's making the difficult look easy. He sheds no tears and voices no bitterness. Yet, how easy can it be to sit helplessly on the sidelines and watch your job being taken away from you? "It's going to be pretty hard to move him out.

He's an exciting ballplayer," Stanley, 32, concedes as he watches Ron Le Flore, 22, play center field for the Detroit Tigers. "I think about it and worry about it a little bit," he said. "But I'm not going to lose any sleep over it." A broken bone in his right hand forced Stanley off the field July 30. On Aug. 1, the fleet LeFlore played his first major league game and he hasn't missed one since.

When Jim Northrup was traded and Norm Cash cut, every veteran on the team felt it. Stanley is among them since he is a year shy of the 10 years with the club he needs to have veto power over any trade.
