a a PETOSKEY NEWS REVIEW WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 1961 EIGHT Boyne Falls, Charlevoix Roll up Easy Victories By Fred Lovelace The Boyne Falls Loggers rolled into the semifinals of the class district tournament here last night with a 57 to 25 victory over Alanson and Charlevoix blasted Cheboygan Catholic's hopes of moving up in class with a 74 to 52 win over the game but outclassed parochial school. Boyne Falls' victory pits them against Inland Lakes Friday night at 7:15 while Charlevoix be meeting Pellston tomorrow at 8:50 in class C. Both of last night's winners have posted two regular season victories over their opponents. In the bracket, Boyne Falls fired shots from the corners and mixed in a couple from under the bucket to gain a 20 to 5 period edge over Alanson and they never ran into trouble after that. The score stayed that way for the first three minutes and a half before Alanson connected on a of free throws to slice the Logger lead to 3 20-9 but they went and saw the Loggers roll up a 30 to 11 halftime edge.

The third period found the going little better for Alanson. While the Loggers were adding 15 points to their total, Alanson managed only three, dropping them behind 45 to 14 when the final eight minutes rolled around. Boyne Falls then ran the edge to 53-14 with four minutes left to go before the Vikings scored again. By this time Logger coach Owen Moore had in a complete batch of replacements. But it was also replacements for the Vikings of coach Bill Mosier who whipped in 10 points to cut the Logger lead to 55-25 with the clock showing red.

A final bucket by Dale Reinhardt rounded out the 57-25 total. Don Kullik paced the winners with 14 followed by Earl Gillespie with 12 and Leonard Puroll with 11. Kullik and Gillespie accounted for 12 points in the first quarter on set shots from the corners. Frank Mayle and Craig Merchant each had six for Alanson with replacement Wayne Fairbairn picking up five. Charlevoix got off to a fast pace also in their class game, posting a 24 to 5 lead in the opening eight minutes over Cheboygan Catholic.

From that point on it was an outstanding exhibition of precision ball handling and floor work that completely baffled the Catholic defense. By halftime, Charlevoix was well in front 41 to 22 riding on the margin built up in the first quarter. Cheboygan Catholic hai caught fire enough to match points at 17-17 in the second period but the big opening quarter lead was too much for the inexperienced Eagles to cope with. Charlevoix came back with 21 points in the third quarter to Cheboygan's 11 to carry a 62-33 lead with them into the final action. Both sides were substituting freely with the Eagle replacements hitting a better pace.

Cheboygan outpointed the Rayders 19 to 12 to round out the final 74-52 total. Charlevoix's floor play last night left little to be desired by any coach. They clicked as a unit no one player attempting to with grab the limelight. This is evidenced by the even scoring of the top four on the squad. Sam Supernaw, playing his usual good game, led the group with 21 but Stan Martin came close to Supernaw with 19 and John Pearl with Jim Dennis ended up with 13 each.

Tom Yankoviak and Bob Yana each had 11 for Cheboygan Catholic. Boyne Falls 20 10 15 12-57 Alanson BOYNE BOYNE Kullik. f. Skop. f.

Red Wings Near Playoff Berth DETROIT (UPI) The Detroit Red Wings aren't "in" yet, but coach Sid Abel slept a little better last "It moves us that much closer," said a smiling Abel in the Wings' dressing room, referring to his club's 3-1 victory over the Boston Bruins last night, which just about clinched fourth place in the National Hockey League and a Stanley Cup playoff berth. "A New York loss to Chicago tonight will help us that much more," Abel added. The Wings have now boosted their fourth-place margin over the Rangers to 10 points, and now need only 3 points in their last five games to wrap up the Cup berth. New York has six contests remaining.

For the Bruins, the loss meant only the assurance of a last place finish in the NHL. With six games left, the best Boston can hope for is a tie for fifth. Gordie Howe and ex-Bruin Vic Stasiuk were the big cogs in the Wing victory. Howe setting un Alex Delvecchio and Stasiuk with goals. Norm Ullman hung up the other Detroit score.

Howe's two assists marked the 14th straight game in which he has racked up at least one point and left him in a tie for the club record with Ullman, who turned the trick in the first 14 games this season. Unsung hero of the game was Bruin goalie Bruce Gamble who stopped 50 shots and thus prevented a rout. Detroit netminder Hank Bassen had an easy night with only 22 saves. The Wings led 2-0 at the end of he first period on Ullman's and Delvecchio's late period goals, their 23rd and 25th of the season respectively. Charlie Burns tallied Boston's lone score early in the second riod with his 12th of the season, cutting the Wings' lead in half, but eight minutes later, Detroit got its two-goal edge back on Stasiuk's 14th.

The Wings close out their season series with the Bruins at Boston tomorrow night, already certain of the season edge with a 7-4-2 Mark. Last night's win snapped a three-game Detroit losing streak, and was only its second victory in the last nine outings. Marc Reaume. was called up from Hershey to bolster the Wing defense and replace Warren Godfrey who aggravated a groin injury Sunday. Harbor Springs will sleet the Elks tomorrow light for the tournament finals at 8 p.m. In the first game last nignt, the Elks took a 21-17 first period lead and upped the margin to 41-35 at halftime and 59 to 48 going into the last quarter. Harbor will have the services back of their ace rebounder Frank Lauer who missed the final game last week because of a leg injury. Charlevoix is an easy choice to roll over the game but inexperienced Pellston Hornets in the second game and if they play like they did against Cheboygan Catholic, their Freesoil, Custer Easy Winners By United Press International By Favored Freesoil, winging in its bid for the 1961 state class basketball championship, a small brigade of expected winners in last night's opening round of district tournaments. The devil-may-care districts will run nightly through Saturday and by that time some three-fourths of Michigan's prep cage hopefuls will lave fallen into oblivion. The' plucky survivors will advance to text week's regionals. The traffic was relatively light last night.

Only in the class ranks did the high and the mighty venture forth in notable clusters and they all passed their initial examinations. Freesoil, the season-long choice as the state's number one class quintet, ripped through Pentwater, 56-35, to highlight a three-game card at Ludington. But Custer, the team that has the best chance of dismantling Freesoil in the district round, also came through convincing fashon, dumping Walkerville, 72-45. The two class powerhouses from the Upper -Marquette Pierce and Hermansvillepolished off first-round foes. Pierce clobbered Michigamme, 70- 29, at Negaunee and Hermansville drubbed Amasa, 73-38, at Iron Mountain.

If the two teams coast through their respective districts, as expected, they will clash in a regional showdown at Marquette next week. Flint St. Matthew, the thirdranked class team in the state. received a scare from Flint Sacred Heart in a hometown opener. The Panthers barely nipped Sacred Heart, 60-57.

There were only a handful of class A games played last night. Detroit Catholic Central, the class of the metropolitan bowled over Southfield, 78-37, at Farmington and in a key battle at Lansing, East Lansing bumped Lansing Everett, 67-65. position in the finals is all but clinched. Pellston has has an off year this season, scoring only one victory against 15 losses but some of their games have been close and could have gone either way. The Rayders nave the better record but they have suffered bot and cold nights this year and if the Hornets put up any kind of a defense against them, they might find the road to the finals a little rougher than they hope for. (UPI) -Shortstop Chico Fernandez checked into the Detroit Tiger camp yesterday after missing the first eight days of spring training.

Fernandez ran into trouble leaving Cuba and arrived here through the runabout route of Mexico City. He arrived after yesterdays workout and began drills today. "'He played winter ball, SO he should be in good shape, said manager Bob Scheffing. Fernandez hit .241 in 133 games last season. He started off like a whirlwind in 1960 and was one of the standouts on the club at midseason, then trailed off sharply in the final two months.

The extra travel to move Fernandez around through Mexico cost the Tigers $500. There are, in all, eight Cuban players in the Detroit system and the additional travel expenses caused by friction with the Cuban government has cost the club a total of $2.000.
