PETOSKEY NEWS-REVIEW, Thursday, January 6, 1966-7 Nests Onaway, Return MS SIMM's Fores irrnrnnnsPi LIU Sports rid Sums Kecjers City in H- MOBILK, Ala. (UPI) Im provements in both the weather and the bruised ribs of Ala The Petoskey Northmen will attempt to strengthen their position in third place in the Huron Straits Conference over the weekend with a doubleheader scheduled to take place Friday and Saturday nights. They will pit their 1-2 record against Onaway (0-3) here tomorrow night and then travel to Rogers City (1-1) Saturday night. A double victory would put them above the .500 mark in conference standings, a place where they have never been in basketball since prior to the 1964-65 season in league play. Last year, when they won only one non-league game in the entire year, they lost two to Onaway 52-42 and 74-62 and Rogers City defeated them twice with scores of 51-48 and 60-49.

During district tournament time they sur- Nine Games Slated For Conference prised the lf-ague with a 53-52 win over Rogers City and most of this same team will be playing here on the weekend series. Coach Dale Burge, unhappy over the costly ball losses and mistakes against Charlevoix last week In their 65-52 loss, said he plans on a major shakeup this week, hoping to bring about five players who can play better as a unit than last week. The loss followed a 70-59 victory the week before over Alpena Catholic who was figured on paper to be a much stronger team than Charlevoix. Burge has been using RonPet-tenger at center with Tom Har-baugh and John Brecheisen at forwards and John Miiller with Clark Smith at guards. Smith tumbled from 22 against Alpena Catholic to eight against Charlevoix while John Brecheisen accounted for five against Charlevoix after picking up 18 against Alpena.

"Without consistant scoring balance of some sort, It Is hard to produce a winning team but I feel that many of our ball losses at Charlevoix could have been turned into easy points had we been on our toes," Burge said. One move he made to strengthen the team was to move up Ben Miiller and Kerry Elder, both sophomores, off the junior varsity. Burge said both may see action this weekend. Onaway has been defeated 75-31 by St. Ignace, 90-55 by Cheboygan and 68-53 by Rogers City.

Petoskey has been defeated 73-45 by the Saints and 63-44 by Cheboygan while defeating Alpena Catholic 70-59 in league action. Onaway's lineup under coach Charles Schaar will likely find Jim Fusee and Tom Gray at forwards with Jim Stump at center and Bill Badgero with Ed McCreery at guards. south section twice. Each team plays all the members at least one and from this Friday on, two teams will have open dates for the regular game nights for the balance of the year. Over in the Northern Michigan Class Conference, Gaylord, the current leader with a perfect 4-0 mark, will be gunning for win number 5 against winless Mancelona who is in the cellar with an 0-4 mark.

This game is on the Gaylord court and the hosts are an outright pick to dump the Ironmen deeper in the cellar. Gaylord however, will be watching the outcome of the Pellston-Boyne City game since the host Hornets are 3-1 and have been recently bolstered by the return of Dennie Bielas who paced Pellston to a double win and the championship in the Central Lake Holiday tournament. Boyne City has a 2-2 record. In other action in the Northern Michigan Class Conference, Harbor Springs (1-3) will go to East Jordan (2-2) hoping to get back on the winning side and Grayling (2-2) goes to Charlevoix (2-2) in the battle to gain third place, now shared by four teams. For the Northern Lakes, it will be the second time around for all teams with the leader Mackinaw City at 5-0 seeking a second win over Central Lake. The Comets won the first game 91-52. In other action in the circuit Bellaire will be at Inland Lakes and Bellaire won the first game 70-50. Boyne Falls will be at Vanderbilt who won the opening game 58-38 while Alanson goes to Johannesburg who won the first game 48-38.

The linebackers will be Dick Leftridge of West Virginia, Randy Schultz of Iowa State and Jim Waskiewicz of Wichita State.

There remained considerable speculation about whether Sloan, the only major unsigned player in the Senior Bowl, would agree to play pro ball for the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL or the New York Jets or Oakland Raiders of the AFL. Sources said, however, Sloan would attract nothing like the figures some top players have been granted this season by professional teams. Abel Named MFL Commissioner PONTIAC (UPI) John Abel, a well known former Michigan athlete, has been named commissioner of the Midwest Football League.

Abel, 50, who now resides in Pontiac, was named this week to succeed F.d McCracken, who resigned to assume the head coaching job with the Dayton Colts in the Midwest League. The League currently consists of five members Pontiac, Flint, Lansing, Ypsilanti and Dayton, but In taking office, Abel said he expects the league to expand to eight members by the opening of the 1966 season. Representatives from the MFL will meet Jan. 22-23 in Pontiac to accept franchise applications from interested cities, including Columbus, Toledo, Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, Jackson and Sap-inaw. Abel began his sports career at Hudsonville High School in Michigan, and went on to captain the Western Michigan University football and baseball teams in 1937.

Later he played professional baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals' system as a bama's Steve Sloan raised the spirits somewhat of the South coaches preparing here for Saturday's North-South Senior Bowl. Sloan worked out with the team Wednesday afternoon In light rain. It has rained since Monday, hampering practice sessions, but clear and cooler weather was due today. The Alabama passing star was injured in the Orange Bowl, but seemed on the mend today and South coach Weeb Kwbank of the New York Jets said, "if I know the boy, he'll be ready to go Saturday." North c'fch Mike Holovak of the Bosto latriots announced his starting tensive and defensive Yearns.

I lineup is dominated by high-scfring quarterback BUI Anderson and end Howard Twll-ley, both of Tulsa. Together, the two set national scoring records during the regular season. South Team Unsure Ewbank said he would announce his starting team later today, following another practice workout. The USISA, which will pay all expenses of the U. S. representatives at the World Championships, stated there is a possibility that two men and two women will be selected to attend the World events and all will be Dirked from the Flint meet.

LSU won 14-7. The license plates, which say "LSU Tigers, Cotton Bowl champs, "66," will be sold for SI apiece with the money going to the club's program for blind children. Palmer Takes Favored Role LOS ANGELES (UPI) -Arnold Palmer, the man with the aura of greatness, vaulted into the favorite's role today for the start of the 72-hole $70,000 Los Angeles Open goLf tournament. Palmer, 36, who finished a comparatively poor No. 9 on the 1965 PGA official list with mere $56,712 in winnings, took top individual honors in the pro-am prelude to the Los Angeles Open Wednesday by firing a 33-34-67-four under par 36-35-71. He picked up a total of $825 for his first official effort in 1966. Of tham amount $500 was for his individual score and $325 for his team total in the best-ball pro-am.

Palmer's team finished in a tie second-behind George Bayer's foursome, which had a net of 57. Palmer was his old smiling self as he whipped through the Rancho Course. He had a birdie-four on the 508-yard ninth hole where a plaque marks the spot where he took a horrendous 12 in 1961. "I'm playing pretty well," he said with an impish smile. This tournament, starting the annual run for the riches, drew 42 of the top 50 money-winners of 1965.

The single season scoring record of 50 which Hull currently holds along with Maurice Richard and Bernie Geoffrion, two former Canadien stars, is within easy reach if the muscular winger can stay healthy for the remainder of the 70-game schedule.

Hull scored 32 goals in Chicago's first 35 games last season but was crippled with knee injuries during the second half and finished with only 39 scores. As a result, the Black Hawks dropped out of contention into third place behind Detroit and Montreal. Chicago is sitting pretty this year, however, three points ahead of the Habs. Kenny Wharram and Eric Nesterenko each scored once for the Hawks, who now have won four games in a row.
