NOVEMBER 13, 1960 Speaking On Sports By John Thompson Sports Editor, The Times Field Goals Bring Auburn Alabama Close Grid Wins Dyas Boots Three Times For 9-6 Win Pennington Sends 2 Through Goals To Get All Georgia's Points By REX THOMAS AUBURN, fAP) Mighty EJ Dyas kicked three field goals for a new national record and gave Auburn a 9-6 football victory over Georgia Saturday. Both teams scored all their points on kicking. The unerring accuracy of Dyas right foot gave him 12 field goals this year at least one in each of the Tigers eight games and a total of 16 in his college career, the most ever kicked by a college player. It was a game replete with suspense, excitement and good football. Not to mention heroism and courage both individually and trams as a whole. Over the 10-game stretch weve had many disappointments but a lot more happy moments, such as Huntsville's victories over MBA and Guntersville and Butler's decisions over Deshler, Athens, Sheffield and Memphis Tech. The disappointing times were in the Panthers losses to Decatur, Sheffield. Emma Sansom; Butler loses to Gadsden, Decatur, Cullman.

Friday night we were thrilled with a display of wide open, rock em-sock em footbaH that would please any fan. We made the wrong pick, which was the case -so many times during the past season. But right or wrong, we thought the game was a clean-fought, hard-played contest with better team coming out on top. Now the lads can turn their thoughts to basketball. Many of Friday night's performers will doff the grid moleskins for the basketball scanties.

And here we go again, for both Butler and Huntsville are reported to be well-laden with basketball talent this coming season. As in football, time will tell. Wr The Toe Came To Game Saturday The toe really played an important role in Saturdays football games between Auburn and Georgia and Alabama and Tech. Field goals brought victories to the Tigers and Tide in the waning seconds. Ed Dyas, Auburns threepoint specialist, won a duel from Georgia's Durward Pennington in a 9-6 ball game.

Dyas kicked three field goals to establish a new national record of 16. Pennington booted a couple to keep the Bulldogs on the heels of the Tigers. Dyas third came in the last seconds. Most dramatic, however, was the one kicked by Alabamas Richard ODell. With the ball sailing through the air goalward, the clock ran out.

Had it missed, Tech would have won, 15-13. But the ball went through and the Tide had a 16-15 thriller in an astounding comeback. Tommy Wells, of Tech, got into the field-goal picture, booting one from 47 yards out. When the experts widened the goals little did they realize how it would affect field goals. More have been tried and made this season than in the.

history of the game. And the fans love it. There's little more exciting or dramatic than to see a field goal attempt with the game's outcome hanging on the balance. It's a good way to get a first-class case of nerves, as any coach can testify. it Here And There In The Sports Whirl Huntsville stock car racing has lost a valuable friend in the passing of Bobby Little, Sportsman's Speedway official.

Little was a sports enthusiast, well-liked among his fellow travelers. Athens Jaycees are staging a banquet Friday night with the proceeds going to send the Ealges to a bowl game. Dave Overton, of TV fame, will be master of ceremonies. Athens, meeting adverse conditions this season, finished with a 1-7-2 record, but the team and its fans were never daunted. Next Saturday Huntsville will be Ihe Mecca for bowlers throughout the state of Alabama.

The Rocket City will host the 16th annual Alabama Men State Rowlitag tournament at the Plamor Tournament Lanes. More than 2.500 keglers will converge on Huntsville for the three weekends of pin-spilling. And have you bought your ticket to the Rocket City Bowl game? Millsaps and Maryville will give spectators a standout game in this VFW charity endeavor. Huntsville youngsters are busy preparing for their own bowl games. Both the YMCA and PeeWre classics are upcoming In a couple of weeks.

And there's where you see some exciting, and well-played football with the kids giving it their all. Rebels Romp To 24-3 Victory Guthrie, cleared the goal post. He had set a new national mark for the most in one season when he kicked two field goals against Mississippi State. Pennington put Georgia out in front 3-0 early in the second period with a 32-vard field goal. Dyas evened the count with one from 24 yards out with 29 seconds remaining in the half. The Auburn.fuliback did itgain in the third period with a 38-yard kick, but Georgia pulled even again when Pennington booted a 25 yard field goal in the final quarter.
