A sellout crowd of 28,000 saw the contest. The Vols, playing conservative football most of the way, took advantage of breaks to score their first two touchdowns, one in the period and another in the second. Vanderbilt made a ball game of It during the first half and trailed only 7-13 at the intermission. But the Orangemen from Knoxville added one more touchdown in each of the last two quarters. The first Vol score was set up by Bill Johnson's fumble recovery on the Vandy 38.

Fullback Tommy Bronson bulled over from the one, nine plays later. Vanderbilt tied it in the second period on fullback Jim Butler's three-yard plunge, climaxing a 68- yard drive. Frank Kolinsky set up Tennessee's tie-breaking score in the second by recovering a fumble on the Vandy 24. Fullback Carl Smith rah the last 15 yards on a reverse. The swivel hipped Majors ran 25 yards for the third Vol marker and Bronson scored the last one on the tailend of a 78-yard march.

Lambert Pledges Interesting Year Tide Coach, Minus All 'Five Starters, Opening Season Monday Night TUSCALOOSA, Dec. 1 4P)- Alabama's Southeastern Conference basketball champions open their 1956-57 schedule Monday, and all new Coach Gene Lambert promises is "an interesting season." Gone are the five starters headed by Jerry Harper and George Linn who presented fiery Coach Johnny Dee with the SEC cage crown, before he too left college basketball. Last season's Tide ranked fifth nationally. Alabama plays Jacksonville State in Foster Auditorium Monday night, Birmingham-Southern here Wednesday, and Eastern Kentucky at Montgomery Saturday night.

Lambert coached at Arkansas and Memphis State, before coming to Alabama. He took two of his five teams to National Collegiate Athletic Assn. playoffs. Because the 1955-56 Tide team was so dominated by its Famous Five, few other varsity candidates have the game experience one would expect of sophomores and juniors. Larobert has five sophomores, six juniors and two seniors.

"If our sophomores come, a along," he said, "We have chance to break into the lower half of the first division in the Southeastern Conference." The sophomores he hopes will develope are forward John O'Keefe, a 6-4 rebounder from Whiting, center E.B. Hamner, 6-6 Alabama pre All-Stater from Holt; and forward Gene Beard, 6-3 All-Stater from Tuscaloosa. Lambert, a student of offensive baseball, predicts the Crimson squad will take an average of 90 shots per game. He is putting emphasis on the fast break and shooting though Tide defense and ball-handling still needs a lot of polishing. Lambert's seniors are team Captain Dale Shuman and Jim Bogan.

Baylor drew the No.

15 spot this week. Baylor's acceptance was subject to the formality of approval by the Southwest Conference. Tennessee's acceptance closed a long cold war between the Sugar Bowl and the Cotton Bowl at Dallas. Cotton Bowl officials last week listed Tennessee as one of their top choices. Tennessee went through its tengame schedule unscathed and with only two close calls.

The Volunteers upset Georgia Tech 6-0 in mid-season when Tech was rated No. 2 nationally and Tennessee No. 3. The victory vaulted Tennessee into the No. over Oklahoma in the following.

week's poll. But Oklahoma regained the top spot the following week. Tennessee's other close call was with perennial jinx Kentucky last week. The Vols trailed 7-6 at the end of three quarters but finished strong with two touchdowns in the last quarter and a 20-7 victory. Baylor won eight of its ten games and finished in a tie for the runnerup spot in the Southwest Conference with Texas Christian, host team in the Cotton Bowl.

The only losses on the Bears' record were a 19-13 loss to unbeaten Texas the Southwest Conference champion, and' a 7-6 setback by TCU. 'Bama then hit for a 63-yard march and a consolation touchdown by halfback Jim Loftin. The victory gave Auburn a 4-3 record in Southeastern Conference competition and 7-3 for the year. Alabama is 2-7-1 in all competiItion. Lorino rushed for 47 yards in eight carries to set a new Southeastern Conference record of 8.4 per carry for the season on a total of 692 in 82 rushes. The old record of 8.1 was set by Lowell Tew of Alabama in 1945.

'Bama fans got a brief thrill in the final seconds, when quarterback Bobby threw a long pass which Auburn's Louis Preis batted into the air on the Auburn 20 and Jackson grabbed it and raced into the end zone. It would have been a 61-yard gain, but the play was nullified by a personal foul. Early in the opening quarter, Alabama drove to the Auburn 17. That was the only other Bama threat. Statistics were as one-sided as the score, Auburn getting 333 rushing and 156 passing to 140 rushing and 34 passing for the losers.

Bobby Hoppe, swift Auburn halfback, topped the rushers with 112 yards in eight carries. Phillips, who played brilliantly in every department, grabbed three passes for 67 yards to bring his year's total to 23 caught for 369 yards. Tubbs completed. 5 of 10 passes for 103, and ran for 45 more in five carries. Jim Loftin, with 11 for 58, was Alabama's top yardage man, Don Comstock, the other Tide halfback, netted 42 and was in on a host of tackles.
