Banks, is still in the vicinity of Port Hudson, and a portion of his troops have gone on an expedition up the Atcha-Ifalaya river, which we suppose ia to act in concert Grantfs, forces in reducing Vicksburg. Rebel advices say that a battle has been fought at Vicksburg, with a great success on either side.

From Gen. Rosecranz army we have the following: The moat brilliant affair, since the battle of Stone River, happened Tuesday afternoon. An expedition, consisting of 1,000 Cavalry and 1,600 Infantry, left Mur-freesboro yesterday morning on the Brady; ville pike and proceeded ntteen miles witnout interruption. On approaching Brady ville the cavalry encountered the pickets of the enemy three-fourths of a mile this side of town. After a slight skirmishing they drove them in and soon came on the enemy in force, ana a brisk fight ensued.

Tho cavalry charged with impetuosity and vigor, and after a few minutes severe.work drove the enemy back to the thick woods, where they made a desperate stand. The second charge of the Cavalry, supported by the Infantry, made the enemy again retire. Meanwhile a detachment of the Cavalry made a detour and came upon a "strong lorco of the enemy posted in camps to the right, nearly a mile from the first line of defence, flanking them, and making a fierce charge and sabre attack, finally forced them from their chosen position. The enemy this juncture gave up the field, and fled in dismay, in the direction of Woodbury, where a cIumn ot the Uonteaerate torcea are encamped. We captured 89 prisoners, killed and wounded a number of Rebels, and took 300 new saddles and accoutrements complete, besides large collections of official orders nnd papers.

The enemy's force consisted of 1,000 Cavalry, from Morgan's command. Dispatches received from Gen. Grant, have given much encouragement to the President and Secretary of War. They express tho utmost confidence in favorable results at Vicksburg; fur Grant asks only for four or five days of good weather to complete his arrangements, which are such that the mili-tary authorities here consider they will re sult not merely in the capture of lcksburg, but also of the rebel army concentrated there. Admiral Porter telegraphs Secretary "Welles as follows: "I regret to inform you that the Indianola has also fallen into the bands of tho enemy.

The rams Webb and Queen of the West attacked her twenty-five miles from Vicksburg, and rammed her until she! surrendered, all of which be traced to noncompliance with my instructions." A special dispaftch says tho rebel on the Rappahannock for two days refused to hold communication with our troops under a flag of Reports from the army of the Potomac represent the condition of the roads as being much worse than, at any previous time. The report of the McDowell Court Inquiry censures him for leaving his comnvand on the evening of the 27th August, to meet ftpn Pnno it Mrmssas Junction, without orders, during which absence King's Division was attacked by the rebels. The finding of the Court is approved by the President. 1 It is again asserted that the President will immediately call out 600,000 men under the conscription act. Guerly, of Ohio, is spoken of for Governor of A rizona.

The Times has a private letter from Port royal which makes the following curious statement; Gen. Foster, just before he went to the North, took a captain and thirty men and made a reconnoissance. They entered Bull's Bay, landing there and marching through the enemy's pickets to within full tight of Charleston and then to within view at Fort Sumter, which was but about a mile and three-quarters distant, so near that officers on the parrapet could Lo plainly seen. They returned unharmed. Thero is reason to believe that a successful attack can be made upon this Babylon of the rebellion, from a quarter heretofore deemed unassailable.

The prize steameV Princess Royal has been purchased by tho Government for 5112,000. A Washington telegram states that acorn vavalry pickets last night, near Union Mills, bat were repulsed. Advices from Guatemala state that that State has declared war against San Salvador. President Carrera had marched with a force variously estimated at from two to six thousand men. The correspondent of tho Times with the army of the Potomac says the army to-day is about as much Ilookerijcd as it was at one, time McCIellanized.

In a word; the Army of the Potomac is ready and willing to follow their new leader wherever he may lead. A special dispatch from Stafford, says: "Col. -Wyndham, with a force of Cavalry, left Centreville, on Friday, and re turned to Falmouth on Saturday evening. He passed through Warrenton, which was who escaped in small-parties. The rebels were discovered at Licking and Elk river, and" some dozen prisoners taken.

Prisoners, deserters from the rebel army, report no force at Culpepper." The steamer Delta, from St. Thomas Feb. 20th, reports that the rebel privateer Florida captured and, burnt, on the 12th of February, the ship Jacob Bell, from China for New York, with a cargo of 1,600 tons of tea.
