Rating (below) in millions of homes. Dwas sitting in the studio at Z'-l07, watching Wayne Newton sign autographs and pose for pictures and talk about his new record, his old records, people he likes (Andrew Dice Clay) and people he doesnt like (Johnny Carson), when it struck me. Wayne Newton should run for president. He had been talking about performers who try to make political statements with their art, performers who use profanity and make rude comments from the stage, performers who bum flags.

I dont go fpr that kind of thing, Wayne said. dpnt disagree with peoples taste. They haVa right. But I think people dont want to be challenged. People dont want to be challenged.

Wayne has hit on the theme for tne campaign. Hey, it worked for Reagan. Wayne would be a natural as a He has name recognition. Everybody knows who Wayne is. If a television sitcom wants a cheap laugh, the writers just have a character utter, Wayne Newton and the laugh track goes off the meter.

Hes played him-selfon TV. He does a goodjob playing himself. Whenever George Bush plays himself on TV, it comes off pounding like Dana (Zarvey from Saturday Night Live. With Wayne, its Wayne. The only problem is Wayne now says he wont play himself anymore.

Its too hard because the writers always have him saying things he wouldn't say or have him react in a way he wouldnt react. But past the pop icon stuff, Wayne Newton seems to be a pretty nice guy. He laughed at disc jockey Randy Raymonds bad jokes. He kissed women fans. He signed autographs for dozens of people.

He talked about being a single parent of a 15- year-old girl, He listened really listened to whoever was talking to him. He was just old Wayne, stopping by for morning coffee. And he was having a fine old time doing it. This, at a time 8 a.m. that he is usually just getting home from work.

He doesnrt quite know how he became the punchline that launched a thousand jokes. I guess if you stick around this business long enough, it happens, he said. I really dont think Johnny Carson has contributed anything to mankind, he says.

(For the record, Wayne is not gay. Hes dated Vanna White. Now theres a perfect couple.) Hes a genuinely nice person. (OK, one strike against him.) That last thing is perhaps the most surprising thing about Wayne Newton. I went to meet Wayne expecting him to be the Godzilla of lounge lizards, some kind of greasy, smarmy, Vegas creature.

I went to meet Wayne Newton expecting to meet Wayne Newton the pop icon, the living legend. Wayne Newton has madequite a livings as a pop icon. Like Zsa Zsa Gabor, hes famous for being famous, but unlike Zsa Zsa, hes never punched out a cop. But lets say you dont have $35 to throw around, because thats about how much youll end up spending. On tickets. You could tack on another $10 with no effort whatsoever if you want concessions.

Now lets say youre willing to wait a month or two to see, for instance, Other Peoples Money or Cape Fear or My Girl. Lets say youre willing to see it on a slightly smaller screen and pay $10.50 for that family of seven. The folks at Greater Baltimore Cinema are hoping that there are a lot of people like you around. Tonight theyre opening Yorks first discount theater Cinema 83 at South York Plaza. The four-screen theater will show films about a month after they show up at first-run theaters and charge $1.50 per seat.

Paul Wenger, executive vice president of Greater Baltimore Cinema, and Robert Wienholt, president, plan to cater to families. Bob has five kids and Ihave Record graphio riums will seat about 170 people. Its smaller auditoriums will seat 130. By comparison, the two largest auditoriums in Queensgate seat 400, while its four smallest ones seat 1 50. Robert Kaplan of the New York-based Family Theaters Holding which owns Queensgate Cinemas, said he thinks people are still going t5 want to see first-run films when they first come out.

He also said Cinema 83 will probably be in Please see MOVIES on CD Money, Cape An American Tail 2: Fievel Goes West and My Girl. As a way of catering to families, the theater will play more films like Fievel Goes West on weekends and earlier showings. The theater has the capacity to play up to eight films a week since it will show two films at different times on One screen. Cinema 83, which will employ 15 people, probably will compete with Blockbuster Video and Queensgate 'Cinemas, both a few blocks north on Queen Street. Cinema 83s two larger audito two, Wenger said, so we realize the financial strain of buying tickets for seven people.
