leu and vjm 01 mis type are in use on the Eastern division hauling fast freight and passenger trains and they are satisfactory so far. Tbe absence of the Bellpaire boiler on these engines iB taken as an evidence of the fact that the recommendations of the engineers are being considered. The Pennsylvania railroad engineers have always insisted that tbe extended wagon-top boiler was the best, and while they admit that the Bellpaire gives better facilities for stay bolts, yet it lacks the space for dry steam and water which the extended wagon-top boiler poshes. II II II From eight to ten locomotives are in the machine shop at the Allegheny works of the Pennsylvania company. The repair work is heavier than for many months, and a large force of men is kept constantly at work.

The big repair yards are crowded with crippled cars which are being put in shape as rapidly as possible. The brass foundry is doing good work supplying composite metal for all the lineB of the Northwest systsm. The carpenter, upholstering and painting departments are busy and everything about tbe big establishment is indicative of the tremendouB rush of traffic on the main line at present. II II II Harrisburg Star-Independent, Decern-der 23: The Pennsylvania has commenced to get ready for Christmas and the let op in business due to merchants being we'll stocked up for tbe holidays, has not come a bit tob soon. As a matter of fact both divisions of the Pennsylvania entering this city are seriously put about for lack of adequate motive power.

The Philadelphia division yesterday become embarrassed through lack of locomotives and last night freight trains had to be run on the storage sidings in Harrisburg and along the middle division about this city. This morning, however, there was muoh activity and the officials at Union station said at noon that freight was moving nicely. All day lone big trains were moved to the east and all available engines were brought into service. The western movement was also heary, enormous trains of empties being handled. Transport Mbahk. in tuk Canal. December We are now on our way through the great canal that divides Africa from Asia. It is ninety miles long and seems to be on an average 300 feet wide. We arrived at Fort Said yesterday about 9 o'clock and found a beautiful harbor, a picturesque city and population attired in all the colors of the rainbow.

The ever present British war ships were on hand to the number of three, and the crews gave us the usual hearty reception. There were also in the harbor a French and a Dutch war vessel, but the crews siumlv looked at us. lhe Hollander, however, as he moved out shortly after we anchored gave us a cheer which our men were very ready to answer. Our anchors bad hardly touched bottom before an English onicer from one of the British ship came on board to pay us a the colonel ana otner omcers an invitation to visit the ships of the nation that is at present going out of its way to be friendly to Uncle Sam. At Gibraltar and at Malta, as well as at Port Said, the American omcers were cordially invited to enjoy the hospitality of the British officers at their clubs on land or on board their ships.

I found that the several Englishmen with whom I talked were very well acquainted witn anairs in America. Tbey read the European edition of the New York Herald as well as the London papers, and when told that the regiment waa organized at Fort Ethan Allen, one o( the officers remarked: "That is on Lake Champlain, isn't it?" When 1 remember that in the Tribune office not even the editor-in-chief knew where Fort Ethan Allen is not veiw long ago, I begin to think that the idea that the Englishman knows nothing about any country save his own is wrong. Our vovage 6n the Mediterranean all the way from Malta to where the Nile makes mnddy tbe waters ot tne great in land ocean was very rough. We did not experience a gale, but tbe waves were higher and made tne snip roll more tnan in the Atlantic. There is probably nothing in the world so wonderful as the city and island of Malta.

The town ib built on bills steeper than those of the Mountain City of Pennsylvania. Many of the cross streets are a succession of stone stairways with short landings. There is one street of this kind that was built before the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem took possession of the island, Tbe buildings are all of stone, and nearly all of them are very ancient. I did not Bee a wooden building on the island.

The English occupants compel the natives to keep comparatively clean, a thing they seem to be unable to do at Gibraltar and Port Said. A common sight on the principal streets of Malta is to see the front of a magnificent palace adorned and almost covered over with articles of clothing and bedding hung out to dry. The palace of the governor of Malta with its priceless tapestrieB, historic relics and costly paintings and furniture is worth more attention than any of us were able to give it. The tapestry of one room alone is valued at-f 500,000. The council room is a lofty chamber, painted and decorated mostly by the old masters.

When Napoleon captured the island he carried all of the movable furniture to Paris, but most of it has been returned to the place where the powerful and historic order of St. John left it. The chair of the grand master of the knights is now the chair of state of the governor general. It is more than 300 years old and was used by Napoleon. With all its history and all its checkered experiences it is still in pretty good condition and very comfortable to sit in.

In tbe armory of the governor's palace is the most com plete collection of relics of the days of chivalry and the crusades, in the world to-day. This armory alone is worth a months visit. Every knight of the Order of St. John gave his armor to this collection when he died or was killed in battle and left his bones to furnish tbe interior of a church known 88 the Chapel of Bones. Here grinning ekulla of the once haughty and powerful soldier monks cover the arches and adorn every available inch of the interior, The trunk, arm and leg bones are piled in regular order like stacks of wood from floor to tbe ceiling.

There is an inscription in Latin on tbe altar which gives as a reason for this exhibition of mortality that it is necessary to create in the minds of tbe living a lively remembrance of the death and that all men are mortal. The Catholic church of St. John is also a very fine structure with magnificently furnished interior. Port Said is the most uncleanly town I ever saw. The only clean persons outside of our own men that I saw were the harbor police, the American consul and the English.

The latter seem to keep themselves everywhere. There is a mosque, perhaps several, but I saw but one. There is a school where tbe chil- dren of the Arabs, Moors, Egyptians and Jews are educated. The teacber.an ugly looking Turk, smoked a long pipe, and his pupils sat on the floor moving their bodies np and down as tbey studied or pretended to study. Each different nationality had a different dress, and most were brig looking boys.

The cost ti I'-y. United States to send the Meade through tbe canal was a little over 9,000. It is to be hoped that our country will take advantage of the opportunity to get a passage way through "I was nearly dead with dyspepsia, tried doctors, visited mineral springs.and grew worse. William Trailer, aged 79 years, died at his home in Newton Hamilton Monday morning of last week after a few days of illDPBB. His widow and nine children survive. One son, Bruce, is a resident of Altoona.

George Gray, of Milesburg, was recently driving in a two-seat spring wagon with several other persons. One of the seats broke down and Mr. Gray was thrown out. One of his ribs was broken and be also received many bruises. He is 76 years old.

The bottom of a cupola dropped out at the Cambria steel works, Johnetown.Fri-day morning, and a flood of molten steel was poured over the entire body of Michael Kopf, a Polish employe. His clothing was completely burned and scarcely a square inch of his body escaped. Harris Cook, of Bellefonte, employed in the Chemistry department at the Bellefonte furnace, made a narrow escape from serious hurt Thursday. He was on the top of an ore car hunting a sample, when the men dumped it. Cook was precipitated through the bottom ot the car, a distance of eighteen feet into a bin, and narrowly escaped being buried.

Luckily he was rescused after sustaining a few cuts and bruises. Duncannon Record: Bucks Valley has five octogenarians.
