This equipment will cost practically five million dollars and is possibly the largest appropriation ever made at one time by a railway in the South for the same purposes- It was stated at headquarters yesterday that file contracts for the" additional equipment were already being placed with the manufacturers; in fact, contracts have already been let for 20 of the locomotives for February delivery.

The Board has also authorized the purchase of 36,300 tons of 85-lb steel rails the ne wstandard weight for the system, contracts for which have been placed for delivery beginning in January and extending to about Jury 1. This will lay nearly 300 miles of new track and is in addition to over 200 miles of the same weight of rati laid during the present year. When it is considered that it was only a few years ago that the 50-lb. rail was almost the maximum used in the South it will be better understood what pro Va, yesteroay irum pw to show that the rush and bustle of opposition to tne lease waa principally the holidays is National. I I In addition to the orders named there are still due on contracts placed early in 1906 between 2,600 and 3,000 freiit cars and 20 locomotives, all of the nlew and latest type. This equipment ig long past due but the builders have simply been on account of the' scarcity of material and labor to make deliveries on time. The progressive policy of the Coast Line can better be understood in the matter of its equipment when it is stated that the gigantic appropriattion just made is in addition to hundreds of thousands of dollars spent In the past two years in increasing and enlarging its terminal facilities, freight yards, at all important points.

Contractors have failed to complete all of this work within the specified time, but it has not been because the road was at all unmindfol of the needs an it hopes to get material results from these increased facilities during the coining year. Seventy miles of double track have been laid during the past year and the work is even now constantly going on. It is also announced from the headquarters 01 the system yesterday that effective on January first, five new operating districts will be established over the system, increasing the number of these from 12 to 17, each in charge of a separate superintendent and a corps of assistants, the obpect being to reduce the size of the present districts so as to get the maximum efficiency of operation. One of these-extra districts is at Wilmington, and will materially increase the already large number of A. C.

L- attaches inr this city. Official announcement of the formation of these new districts and the appointments of superintendents and trainmasters was made from the office of Mr. A. W. Anderson, general super intendent of the road last night.
