Gilbert Turmon Recovered From Injury And Expected To Lead Team On Defense ATLANTA, Ga. (SN5) Our strongest position at this stage is tackle," said Clark College Head Coach Leonidas S. Epps following a "controlled" scrimmage Thursday. "Our defense is definitely better than our offense and Gilbert Turmon, returning with a last season injury completely healed, has been about the most aggressive member of our strong group of veteran tackles." Clark College Quarterbacks Battle For Starting Position Epps Highly Impressed With Two Freshmen Signal-Callers Although a sophomore by the name Elmer Mixon has a head start by virtue of limited experience last year, the man who barks out the signals for Clark College's Panthers this year may be any one of three aspirants for the quarterback position. "We have been concentrating a lot on pass defense, continued the Clark coach, a spot where we were weakest last year.

At this point, if Saturday were our opening date, I'd say Port Valley would have a difficult time getting passes around the group of alert and fast backs we have in defense." tions this year, Coacn Epps finds himself in just the opposite position he was in when the 1960 season opened. At that tune there were no veteran tackles to carry the load. Those who will flu the spots this year had their baptism by fire last year and have given Epps great confidence for assignments in the coming season. Sam Wright, David Palmer and Robert Barksdale are the experienced ends. Wright and Palmer play mostly delensive, but may be called on for offensive duty this year.

However, Charles Benford, a sophomore is shaping up well as a prospect for offensive duties along with Barksdale, whom Coach Epps calls "as good as any end In the conference. WAGNER'S VICTORY Democratic National Committee WASHINGTON lUPI) The said Friday that Mayor Robert Wagner's victory indicates a Democratic strength in New York Whicn will chill Republican hopes of a statewide victory In 19962 earn his team the state foootball championship. In scrimmage, Roberts hr, moved the team as well as perhaps a litte better than any of the three quarterback hopefuls Elmer Mixon, who hails from Bessemer, Alabama, Itle only Panther quarterback who will be even faintly recognized as a holdover from last year and the best choice right now for first unit duties for the Clarkltes. But lets underscore that right now, because he is being hard-pushed to hold his grip by two very talented newcomers. To share the duties at the tackle spot will be Louts Nevett, 225 pounds; Randolph Smith, 205 pounds; John Vance, 215 pounds; Lionel Downer, 238 pounds; Abraham Franklin, 206 pounds; and a newcomer, Ronald Loving, 210 pounds.

Enough beef to hold their own against anything the conference has to offer. Getting back to Turmon, who is a cousin of the great Roman Turmon who starred for Clark in three sports a few years back, Epps called him a player who will be most valuable to us in the center of the line. Atackle last year, Turman has been converted to fill a guard spot This conversion acknowledges and pays tribute to the fine group of uiiklcs on the Clark squad this year. Fast and very aggressive, Turmon sparked on defense and offense in this week's bead-knocking, making a number of key tackles and doing more than his share of timely blocking. With strength at the tackle posi Strength at tackles, though weak-end last year, was as good most of the season as In the 1959 season when the Panthers dropped only Robert Lowe, the third quarter-all-aroUnd back at this slot.

Epps clearly defined him as the best defensive quarterback. Last year Lowe called the plays for Atlantas Howard High School and was a member of the All-Star team in the East-West selections. At this point he is virtually assured of assignments as a defensive quarterback, and because of his triple-threat ability be may wind up doing a major share of Clarks signal calling. 1 Lomond Godwin has just been moved from quarterback to end. but because of his showing In limited appearances on defense at this position last year, he may see as much action quarterback defensively as he will at the end position.

Epps calls Godwin a good tackier who hits hard. At end he will contribute greatly to a position that is net very strong beyond the first unit Be Sure To Vote Friday Bivins, Brown and Willie Gali-nore, the Florida A. and M.
